What's New with Green Building XML?

It's been a while since we sent out a gbXML newsletter. In fact, we've been very busy with a number of gbXML initiatives including:

1. Completed the ASHRAE RP-1815 research project that focused on integrating occupant behavior data into BIM for performance simulation. This involved updating the gbXML schema and proposing updates to Industry Foundation Classes (IFCs) with commercial building occupant behavior elements. Indeed, we updated the next version of the schema based upon the results of ASHRAE RP-1815 (discussed below).
2. We welcomed new software vendors who integrate gbXML.
3. We encountered and supported a number interesting seminars and research papers focused on gbXML (discussed in a future newsletter).

In today's newsletter, we'll focus on the proposed new updates to gbXML: Version 8.01. See below for details.

The Proposed New Update to gbXML - Version 8.01 

Version 8.01 of the gbXML schema is now available for a 45-day public review starting on May 26 and ending July 10, 2025. It includes one major category of updates:

ASHRAE RP-1815

gbXML was a big part of ASHRAE RP-1815, "Integrating Occupant Behavior Data into Building Information Modeling for Performance Simulation" that was completed in August 2024. This research project centered on advancing the state of occupant behavior modeling as part of building information modeling (BIM) and energy modeling and simulation (BEM) workflows. The research drew heavily on Lawrence Berkeley's Occupant Behavior XML (obXML) occupant behavior modeling schema as an influence and point of departure for this work. A variation of the entire obXML schema was incorporated into this new gbXML update.
