What is the measure of progress? Any time we set out to accomplish something, we do it with a specific goal in mind. If we didnāt have the goal, we wouldnāt have started in the first place. Immediately following the goal is the plan or procedure by which we hope to reach the goal. Sometimes along the way, we have to tweak the plan or make changes to the process, but the goal remains the same.
Progress is the determining factor as to when and if those changes are needed. The goal of developing a steady and competent workforce is not new in the precast industry, but it is being pursued with new vigor at both the regional and national levels. The collective understanding that our precast workforce is the heart and soul of what we do is the centerpiece of many short and long-term goals for PCI Gulf South. As an association, we see progress being made and we recognize that there is still a long way to go.
The progress we currently see can be measured in the increased market share precast building products have seen in the past year, the increased recognition of our precast products by engineers and designers, the interest in our expansive webinar series that highlights the capabilities of our products, the increased student outreach and university collaboration we share with our future industry leaders and the eagerness of PCI Gulf South producers to support programs and initiatives that build a future workforce.
As 2022 comes to a close, we celebrate the progress we have made in the industry and we look forward to taking up the reins in the new year with renewed motivation for all that lies in front of us.
From all of us at PCI Gulf South, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Dan

Thermal Mass, Energy Codes and Prestressed Concrete Solutions Webinar
|
|
Mass walls, in combination with insulation, can save energy in buildings. This presentation describes the benefits of thermal mass (thermal inertia) and how these benefits are recognized in national energy codes. An overview of the compliance paths of these energy codes is presented.
Time: January 10, 2023 @ 12pm CST
Credit: 1.0 AIA LU/HSW or up to 1.0 PDH
Learning Objectives
1. Identify why mass walls save energy.
2. Learn the heat capacity requirements for mass walls in energy codes.
3. Determine how thermal mass provisions are presented in national energy codes.
4. Learn how metal thermal bridges that penetrate the insulation in a mass wall degrade its R-value.

AIA Conferences on Architecture
|

It seems as though this year, October was the month of the architect. All three state organizations held their annual Conference on Architecture within the month of October and two were held at the same venue, the beautiful Lodge at Gulf State Parks in Gulf Shores, AL. This year, Associate Professor Alexis Gregory of Mississippi State University and I had the opportunity to speak with the MS AIA attendees about the ongoing studio at Mississippi State and all of the wonderful activities the students are engaged in.
