FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS LEGISLATURE

Veterans Suicide Awareness and Remembrance Day Legislation Passes House

This past week, the House engrossed H.3388, which I filed alongside Senator O'Connor. The bill would make September 22nd Military Service Members and Veterans Suicide Awareness and Remembrance Day. The bill will now go to the Senate. This annual day of remembrance supports our veterans, service members, and their families by promoting awareness and providing resources to those struggling. Caring for our service members at home is a community effort.

Rep. Meschino Testifies on Building Decarbonization Bill

On Thursday, I testified before the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy in support of H.3529, An Act relative to building energy and decarbonization. Massachusetts' climate goals are meant to be ambitious to drive innovation, and decarbonizing our buildings is the next important step to reach net-zero. 80 percent of the buildings that exist in 2050 have already been built today, so this investment in energy efficient and clean buildings will have lasting results in cost savings, carbon emissions reductions, improved public health, and more resilient buildings for decades to come.

MA Caucus of Women Legislators Celebrates 50th Anniversary

I enjoyed catching up with colleagues new and old as part of the 50th anniversary celebration for The Caucus of Women Legislators. In over 400 years, only 243 women have served in the state legislature in Massachusetts, and just 27 have been women of color. The Caucus, which is the longest running women's caucus in the nation, aims to empower women in the legislature.

IN THE DISTRICT

Linden Ponds Hosts Hingham Citizens’ Police Academy Graduation

Linden Ponds hosted a Hingham Citizens’ Police Academy graduation where twenty Linden Ponds community members were celebrated for their completion of the program.

The academy is the longest running in the state and acts as a model for other departments in New England. I was joined by Senator O’Connor’s office in congratulating the graduates from this program, which helps create stronger ties between citizens and law enforcement and provides increased understanding and public engagement.

The 10-week long program covers a wide variety of topics including motor vehicle law, domestic violence, animal control, a ride-along with an officer, and a K9 demonstration.

Rep. Meschino and Senator O'Connor's District Director Elizabeth Vater, speak at the graduation ceremony

Foster Elementary School Holds Ribbon Cutting

I attended the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Foster Elementary School in Hingham this month. This investment is a commitment to excellence in public education, and I was happy to celebrate the occasion with Senator O'Connor, Superintendent Roberts, and many other champions of education in the Hingham community.

Safe Harbor Cohasset Recognizes Overdose Awareness Day

This month, I attended Safe Harbor Cohasset's Candlelight Vigil in recognition of Overdose Awareness Day. The event sought to reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, raise awareness about overdose prevention, and bring together the community to remember those lost to substance use. August 31st was International Overdose Awareness Day and September is National Recovery Month. It is vital that we provide sufficient resources for those among us currently struggling with substance use disorders and our communities which feel the ripple effects.
