NATIONAL PROSECCO DAY
National Prosecco Day on August 13 represents a time to raise a toast to the remaining days of the season. As we bask in the warmth of the resounding rays of summer, the day encourages people across the US to embrace life’s everyday celebrations.
A sparkling wine, Prosecco is made from a variety of grapes. One of the oldest is the Glera. However, Prosecco can also be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir. Primarily grown and bottled in the Veneto region of Italy, Prosecco's draw is its elegant mousse. In wine-speak, the mousse is the lovely, persistent bubbles. These bubbles give Prosecco the sparkle that makes it so appealing for celebrations.
Along with that touch of sweetness (usually dry) and light-bodied, refreshing aromas, Prosecco exudes an easygoing sense of fun. Flavors of white spring flowers, citrus fruits, and green apples paired with a wallet-friendly price tag place Prosecco in the right place for any celebration.
As the most sold sparkler in the U.S. – having surpassed the 4-million case mark (according to Impact Databank), it only fits that this long revered aperitivo of choice for Italians should earn its own ‘National Day’ of recognition. Some say no other beverage defines the Italian philosophy of la dolce vita, or the good life, quite like Prosecco.
Prosecco's bubbles come in many forms. Spumante is the bubbliest of the proseccos followed by frizzante. Finally, the calmest is the tranquillo. As summer's fun lulls into autumn’s social afterglow, National Prosecco Day reminds us of the fruits of our labors with its notes of apple and pear.

President Biden will announce $23 million grant for Tulane cancer research in New Orleans
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will arrive in New Orleans Tuesday to announce new funding for a cancer detection technology formulated by Tulane University researchers that could transform how surgeries are performed and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
The $23 million in funding for Tulane’s project is part of the president’s Cancer Moonshot program, an ambitious plan to reduce the number of cancer deaths by 4 million over the next two and a half decades.
While there have been significant strides in cancer research since the moonshot initiative was first announced in 2016, The American Cancer Society estimated over 611,000 people will die of cancer in the U.S. this year, where it is the second-leading cause of death.
An outsized portion of those deaths are in Louisiana. On a heat map of cancer deaths, the state consistently glows bright red, always ranking among the regions with the highest burden.
The new technology, an imaging system known as MAGIC-SCAN, is a way to more precisely help doctors remove cancer, making sure there is none left behind that might require additional surgeries and treatments.
Tulane University President Michael A. Fitts hailed the announcement as a historic milestone.
“Tulane is a proud partner in supporting the goal of the Biden Cancer Moonshot,” Fitts said in a prepared statement. “This advancement will save lives.”
How it works
When a patient has a tumor, the goal is to remove as much of it as possible without damaging the surrounding organs and tissue. The difference between removing all the cancer cells and leaving a few behind can be millimeters, said Dr. L. Spencer Krane, chief of urology at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System.
But doctors have to be careful to remove only that which is truly necessary. A tiny margin can determine whether a prostate cancer patient can keep urinary and erectile function, or whether a laryngeal cancer patient exits a surgery with the ability to speak intact.
“Ultimately, inside of your body, millimeters matter a great deal,” said Krane, a researcher on the project.
Balancing cancer removal with preserving the tissues and function of the body is a delicate act. Right now, cancer surgeons do this with some help from imaging. They rely on what they see and feel during surgery. But confirmation of complete cancer removal only happens after the fact.
To tell if cancer cells have really been removed, slices of the tumor are sent off to a lab, where it take days or weeks for pathologists examining slides under microscopes to determine whether there might have been cancerous cells left behind.
Cancer cells left behind after surgery can grow into a new tumor or spread to other parts of the body. Patients might need another surgery or further treatment like chemotherapy or radiation. In prostate cancer patients, residual cancer cells are found in 8% to 35% of patients, depending on the stage, said Krane.
The MAGIC-SCAN imaging system stands for machine-learning assisted gigantic image cancer margin scanner. Using it, doctors can see in real time whether the cancer has been completely removed by taking thousands of scans within minutes and stitching them together into a map of the tumor, but at a microscopic level, said J. Quincy Brown, associate professor of biomedical engineering in the Tulane School of Science and Engineering and lead researcher on the project. Doing so would help doctors understand where the cancer ends and healthy tissue begins.
"The idea is to remove the tumor completely," Brown explained, likening the process to scanning an orange to ensure no pulp (cancer) remains beneath the peel (healthy tissue).
The grant is through the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, a federal funding agency established by the Biden administration to rapidly advance high-impact research.
The imaging process currently takes about 45 minutes. While Brown is testing the device now, it’s not being used in real time to give feedback during surgeries yet. At the end of five years, their aim is to deliver a functional prototype that can scan a tumor in under ten minutes.
'Hits close to home'
President Biden has a deeply personal interest in cancer research. His son Beau died of glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, in 2015.
For Brown, too, it’s personal.
“My mother had a thyroid cancer this past year,” Brown said. “You’re really worried about whether they are going to get it all out.”
Brown grew up in Columbia, Louisiana, a small rural town situated on the Ouachita River in the northern part of the state. That also makes this a personally meaningful challenge: The grant stipulates that the device has to be delivered to two rural hospitals at the end of the five years.
“We can't build a million-dollar device,” Brown said. “We have to build something that is going to work in a rural hospital where they don't have a lot of resources.”
“To me, that's fun,” said Brown. “And it hits close to home for me, because of where I'm from.”

Perseid meteor shower 2024: How and when to view the brightest, most colorful shower of the whole year
The Perseids will hit their peak next week across the Northern Hemisphere. Here’s how to see it where you live.
Cassie Morris·Reporter

On Aug. 11 through Aug. 13, the Perseid meteor shower will be visible in night skies all across the Northern Hemisphere — no telescope required.
The Perseid meteor shower, commonly known as the Perseids, is considered the brightest, most prolific meteor shower of the year. With about 50 to 100 visible meteors per hour streaking across the sky with long “wakes” of light and color, it’s one of the most plentiful showers.
Because of this, the Perseids are the highlight of many a meteor hunter's calendar — but you don’t have to be an astronomer to spot this cosmic display. Here’s how to see the Perseid meteor shower in your own backyard.
☄️ What is the Perseid meteor shower?
The Perseids, named for the constellation Perseus (the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to come, called the radiant), are leftover particles ejected from the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Earth every 133 years.
Behind these particles trails a cloud of dust and debris — the Perseid cloud — which Earth passes through every year. As our atmosphere collides with this debris, the comet particles disintegrate, creating fiery, colorful streaks in our sky.
Because of its high amount of fireballs — large explosions of light and color — the Perseids are one of the most vibrant showers. These explosions appear very bright and persist longer than those in the average meteor shower.
🗓️ When is the Perseid meteor shower?
The Perseid meteor shower is active and visible annually from mid-July to late August.
This year, the shower will peak between Aug. 11 through Aug. 13, with visibility a few days on either side of that date range.
NASA predicts that skygazers might be able to see 100 meteors per hour during this peak.
⏰ Best time to see the Perseid meteor shower
The Perseids are best viewed from midnight to dawn, when the radiant is highest in the sky — though it is possible to view meteors from the shower as early as 10 p.m.
You will see the most meteors right before dawn, so set your alarm clock early — or be prepared to stay up late!
🔎 Where to look for the Perseid meteor shower
Although the constellation Perseus is the radiant point of the shower, it is not the only place in the sky you should look. So long as the sky is clear, and you’re far enough away from light pollution, the meteors can appear anywhere.
And the more sky, the better: Find an area with a clear view of the horizon, away from trees and tall buildings.
As for how to see the Perseid meteor shower, your naked eye is best. Binoculars and telescopes will only restrict the size of the sky visible to you.

These hot temperatures can become life-threatening if the proper precautions are not taken. Residents can visit weatherwise.nola.gov to find localized updates on weather conditions when considering outdoor activities.
Residents are advised to take the following precautions to prevent health emergencies due to overexposure to extreme heat:
- Stay indoors in air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day
- If you must perform outdoor activities, do so early in the morning or late in the evening
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing
- Avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun
- Be sure to drink plenty of water, and do not wait until you’re thirsty
- The very young, the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, are at a greater risk for heat-related health issues and should take extra precautions to stay cool and hydrated
- Check on neighbors, children, the elderly and chronically ill to make sure they are okay, especially every hour if power outages occur.
Children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle. Even in 70-degree weather, the interior temperature of a vehicle can increase rapidly to over 100 degrees in just 20 minutes. Cracking a window does not help. Leaving a child or pet unattended in a vehicle often leads to a life-threatening emergency. Anyone who sees a child or animal unattended in a vehicle is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately.

The silver screen, also known as a silver lenticular screen, is a type of projection screen that was popular in the early years of the motion picture industry and passed into popular usage as a metonym for the cinema industry. The term silver screen comes from the actual silver (or similarly reflective aluminum) content embedded in the material that made up the screen's highly reflective surface. | | | |

NATIONAL FILET MIGNON DAY
National Filet Mignon Day on August 13 celebrates a specialty cut of beef. Usually, from a steer or heifer, a filet mignon is a steak taken from the smaller end of the tenderloin of the beef carcass.
Filet mignon is French for “cute fillet” or “dainty fillet.” In French, filet mignon may be called filet de boeuf, which translates to beef fillet in English. When found on a French menu, filet mignon may also refer to pork rather than beef. Since the filet mignon comes from the most tender portion of the tenderloin, it's one of the most prized cuts of beef. Therefore, expect this steak to be the most expensive.
Filet mignon is commonly cut into 1 inch to 2 inch thick portions, grilled, and then served as is. When found in grocery stores, filet mignon is already cut into bacon-wrapped portions. The usual method for cooking the filet mignon is to cook it on high heat by either grilling, pan-frying, broiling or roasting. Restaurants may sometimes prepare the fillets served in a cognac cream sauce, au Poivre with peppercorns, or in a red wine reduction.
Due to the low levels of fat found in the fillets, bacon is often used in cooking. The bacon is wrapped around the fillet and pinned closed with a wooden toothpick. The bacon adds flavor, and this process keeps the fillet from drying out during the cooking process.

Grammar Myths Debunked: What You Didn’t Know About Everyday Rules
The Great Grammar Gossip
Long before the era of social media and Internet trolls, myths about grammar rules have been circulating in our society. From elementary school classrooms to corporate boardrooms, these 'rules' are propagated, accepted, and enforced without question. But how many of them are valid, and how many are simply hearsay? Time to debunk some of the most persistent grammar myths.
Split Infinitives are a No-No
One of the most infamous grammar myths is the prohibition against splitting infinitives. The infinitive form of a verb consists of the word 'to' followed by the base form of the verb, as in 'to go' or 'to see'. A split infinitive occurs when an adverb or adverbial phrase is inserted between 'to' and the verb, as in 'to boldly go'.
This 'rule' allegedly originated from Latin grammar, where it's impossible to split an infinitive because it's a single word, like 'ire' (to go). However, English isn't Latin. In English, sometimes the most natural position for an adverb is between 'to' and the verb. So feel free to boldly split infinitives when it improves clarity or emphasis.
Don’t End a Sentence with a Preposition
Another classic grammar myth is that it's incorrect to end a sentence with a preposition. This 'rule' is another Latin-based relic, as in Latin, prepositions always precede the noun or pronoun they're linked with. But again, English is not Latin. In English, prepositions often naturally end up at the end of a sentence, especially in questions like "Who are you talking to?" or statements like "That's the best movie I've ever seen!"
Trying to avoid ending a sentence with a preposition can lead to awkward or overly formal language. For instance, "To whom are you talking?" sounds stilted and obsolete. So, don't be afraid to end a sentence with a preposition if it makes your sentence sound more natural.
Never Start a Sentence with 'And' or 'But'
The myth that you shouldn't start a sentence with a conjunction such as 'and' or 'but' is another grammar myth that needs debunking. This 'rule' was probably taught to prevent young writers from creating sentence fragments or run-on sentences. However, in mature writing, starting a sentence with a conjunction can be an effective way to create emphasis or show a contrast or progression of ideas.
Just remember: when starting a sentence with a conjunction, make sure the sentence is complete and can stand on its own.
'I' Before 'E' Except After 'C'
This rule is taught in many English classrooms, but it has more exceptions than words that follow it. Words like 'weird', 'seize', 'height', 'their', 'ancient', 'science', 'sufficient', and 'weird' all violate this rule. While it can be helpful as a general guideline, don’t rely on it as an absolute rule.
The Myth of Double Negatives
Many people believe that using a double negative in English results in a positive statement. This belief stems from the rules of mathematics, not language. In some languages, double negatives are the norm. In English, they can be part of regional dialects or used for emphasis in a poetic or rhetorical context.
In conclusion, language is a living, evolving entity. Just because a rule was once taught doesn't mean it's still applicable today. English is a flexible and diverse language that can't be boxed in by rigid rules. So the next time someone corrects your grammar based on one of these myths, feel free to enlighten them. It's time to stop the grammar gossip and focus on clear, effective communication.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. An eclectic group of adults… playing six mid-pubescents, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. [Rated: PG-13]

Broadbent Selections is not a name you hear as often as say Kermit Lynch, or Rosenthal Wine Merchants or Louis/Dressner, but that makes them no less important in the world of wine. Representing only 50 producers at any given time, its reputation for curating a high-quality and unique portfolio has made Broadbent a prominent player, especially in niche and specialty wines. The company's focus on authenticity, tradition, and sustainability has earned it respect and recognition among wine enthusiasts and professionals.
The company was founded in 1996 by Bartholomew Broadbent, son of wine critic, author, auctioneer and Master of Wine, Michael Broadbent. Growing up in a wine-focused family, Bartholomew developed a deep appreciation and knowledge of wine from an early age. His work has had a considerable impact on the wine industry, particularly in the U.S., where he has helped elevate the profile of many wines and wine regions that were previously underrepresented.
This carefully curated portfolio of high-quality and unique wines focuses on Europe and South Africa but is particularly noted for its selections from Portugal, especially Madieras and Ports. Join Wesley Kohler-Bergere as we explore 5 high-quality wines that represent the breadth of this thoughtful portfolio.
Learn a little, drink a little and have some fun with us!

Another big piece of the Saints 2024 schedule has officially been finalized, with dates and times established for each of the Saints' three preseason games.
The team will have its first two preseason games out west due to their training camp being held in Irvine, California.
- P2, Aug. 18: Saints at San Francisco 49ers, 7 p.m. (FOX)
- P3, Aug. 25: Tennessee Titans at Saints, 1 p.m. (FOX/Gray TV)
The Saints preseason opponents were announced with the rest of the 2024 schedule earlier in May, but exact dates and times for two of the matchups were left TBD. As is typical with the preseason, start times and days are all over the map. The Saints will kick off their preseason slate with a Saturday night game, and also start an hour later than a typical Sunday kick in the finale, hosted at the Caesars Superdome.
RELATED
Saints land 2 cold weather games in 2024. Cam Jordan is NOT a fan.

The New Orleans Saints will host two open training camp practices for fans once they return from California later this summer.
The Saints announced Monday that the two sessions will take place Aug. 20 and Aug. 23 at Yulman Stadium at Tulane University and at Caesars Superdome, respectively. The times of the practices and fan information will be revealed later.
The announcement came as part of the Saints’ unveiling of their training camp schedule. With the Saints holding camp at the University of California, the Saints will leave for Irvine on Monday, July 22 and stay out west until Aug. 19.
When in Irvine, the Saints will hold two days joint practices with the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 in leadup to their Aug. 18 preseason showdown at San Francisco.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

2024 Full Moon schedule
(all times Eastern)
- Aug. 19 — 2:26 p.m. — Sturgeon Moon
- Sept. 17 — 10:34 p.m. — Corn Moon
- Oct. 17 — 7:26 a.m. — Hunter’s Moon
- Nov. 15 — 4:28 p.m. — Beaver Moon
- Dec. 15 — 4:02 a.m. Cold Moon
Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.
Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.
Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.
Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.
Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.
In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.
Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.
Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.
Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.
To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.
Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail
Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!
