From Our Team

This week: Hannah Staggs | Membership Dev. & Events Coordinator

Well, here we are — the final day of our fund drive!

Before we make one last push toward our goal, we want to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who has already made a gift, shared our fund drive with a friend, or simply tuned in and cheered us on. Your support means so much to all of us here at the station.

We also want to give a special shout-out to those who offered challenge gifts and matching funds during the drive. Your generosity helped motivate others to give, too. And we’ve especially enjoyed having some of our listeners join us live on the air for a few pitch breaks. Getting to hear your voices — and share a little of what this station means to you — has been one of the highlights of the drive.

If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to make your gift, today’s the day. Help us finish the fund drive strong and keep this station doing what it does best: bringing you the music, stories, information, and connection you count on.

And while today is the last day of the fund drive, it’s never the last day to support your station. Gifts are always welcome, and every contribution helps keep us here for you and for all.

Thanks for listening. Thanks for giving. And most of all, thanks for being part of this station.

This Week's News

The Maryville City Council received an update on a new building inspection program included in the fiscal year 2027 budget. The program will add a full-time position, with inspections expected to begin with commercial buildings in April or May, focusing first on manufacturers with higher hazards. Residential inspections are planned for next summer, with details to be developed in consultation with landlords and realtors.

Maryville native Adam Dorrel has stepped down as head football coach at the University of Central Oklahoma following an incident with officials after Saturday’s 33-31 loss to Central Missouri. UCO cited his conduct as inconsistent with its expectations for leaders. Defensive coordinator Cody Swanson will serve as interim coach. Dorrel went 30-21 at UCO after taking over in 2022. He previously coached at Northwest Missouri State from 2011-16, leading the Bearcats to three national championships and a 76-8 record.

The Children’s Trust Fund of Missouri will receive a record $7.43 million in federal funding for voluntary home visiting programs serving families in Andrew, Buchanan and 11 other counties. The funding is a $901,859 increase from last year and supports services for parents during pregnancy and early childhood.

Nodaway County Sheriff Austin Hann told county commissioners the courthouse will have added security on court days, with employees entering and exiting on the west side and public access on the east side. Hann also reported a jail inmate clogged a sewer line with towels and rags, but the issue was caught before damage occurred. The sheriff also provided updates on staffing, a new records management system and the jail’s population of 19 inmates as of Oct. 1.

The Mosaic Life Care Foundation is providing free, one-year family memberships to inspireU Children’s Discovery Center for all 760 kindergarten students in St. Joseph public schools. The memberships, funded by a gift from retired Heartland Health CEO Lowell Kruse and his wife, Leslie, are valid through Aug. 31, 2027 and include two adults and up to four children per household.

Construction on Evergy’s new power plant south of Maryville is progressing, with about 352,000 cubic yards of dirt expected to be moved by the end of the year. Two warehouses, a training center and a 450-vehicle parking lot are also planned. Underground construction will begin in early 2027, followed by above-ground construction in mid-2028. The project is expected to continue through 2031, with J-turns planned along Highway 71 to accommodate plant traffic and semis.

Beyond the Midwest: NPR News

  • An NPR investigation found evidence that an ICE warehouse in Roxbury, New Jersey, may be being used to temporarily hold immigrants despite a court order halting its conversion into a detention center. The warehouse was part of a billion-dollar plan to create ICE detention facilities, but the plan faced legal challenges and was largely abandoned. Witnesses and a man later deported to Honduras told NPR they were taken to the Roxbury site following an immigration raid. DHS did not directly address whether detainees were being held there, while local officials and immigrant advocates are calling for an investigation and congressional oversight.

Harvest Public Media

The Trump administration has granted exemptions to hundreds of industrial facilities from stricter Clean Air Act regulations adopted during the Biden administration. In Missouri, Ameren’s Labadie Energy Center received an exemption from tighter mercury limits, raising concerns among nearby residents and environmental groups about pollution and health risks. Supporters of the exemptions, including industry groups, say the rules could require costly upgrades, increase energy costs and threaten reliability. Environmental groups argue the protections are needed to reduce toxic air pollution and are challenging the exemptions in court.
