Turning 21 marks an important transition, and that’s just as true for chimpanzees as it is for humans. Early adulthood is when male chimps begin to come into their own—physically, socially, and emotionally—learning how to navigate complex group dynamics, build relationships, and, in some cases, step into leadership roles. This week, that transition belongs to Kenzy, who turns 21 tomorrow on January 31st.
In the wild and in sanctuaries alike, male chimpanzees in their early 20s are often still “learning the ropes.” Dominance doesn’t come automatically; it’s shaped by experience, social learning, confidence, and relationships. Young adult males test boundaries, refine communication skills, and figure out how to balance strength with social intelligence. A successful leader isn’t just the biggest or strongest; he’s observant, adaptable, and able to maintain harmony within his group.
Kenzy’s journey to becoming the dominant male of his group (alongside Noelle, Hannah, Crystal, and Bentley) has been anything but straightforward. Because Kenzy came from a breeding facility and the entertainment industry, he didn’t grow up with a consistent adult male role model or mentor to demonstrate what healthy leadership looks like. As a result, he struggled with dominance early on, often unsure whether he even wanted the role. That uncertainty is something we see in chimpanzees who missed out on normal social development, and it’s a reminder of how critical early experiences are for these complex, intelligent animals.
Now, at 21, Kenzy is truly stepping into his own. While leadership is still a learning process, he’s beginning to find his rhythm, gaining confidence, navigating group relationships more thoughtfully, and embracing his role despite the challenges of his past. Watching Kenzy grow into a more assured and capable leader has been a powerful reminder that growth doesn’t follow a set timeline. With patience, support, and the right environment, chimpanzees like Kenzy can continue to learn, adapt, and thrive—no matter where their story began.
