Resilience, Perseverance, and Compassion: Tina’s Journey

Tina is widely recognized in her community for her selflessness and dedication to helping others, self-admittingly putting others' needs above her own. As a mother, grandmother, teacher, and survivor, she embodies resilience, perseverance, and compassion. Having a safe place to call home can be a powerful tool for transformation, growth, and healing. Tina knows this journey well.

“I don’t know how to explain it, but this housing made all things possible... I’m able to focus on my healing knowing that I’ve still got a place to call home.”

-Tina, MHO Resident

$3.5 Million Awarded to MHO for Balsam Edge Development in Waynesville

MHO has been awarded a $3.5 million grant from the Haywood County Board of Commissioners to support the development of Balsam Edge, an 84-apartment complex in Waynesville. This funding, provided by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development through the NC Office of Recovery and Resiliency, is part of the Tropical Storm Fred relief efforts from 2021 to help create new affordable housing in Haywood County. Balsam Edge will feature 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units serving renters who earn from below 40% to 60% AMI.

"Many across the nation have felt the impact of rising construction costs and high interest rates, which directly affect affordable housing. This grant is essential in moving the project forward by helping to eliminate funding gaps that often hinder development. The good news is, we aren’t waiting on the funding award, which is the hardest piece to accomplish.”

-Geoffrey Barton, President/CEO, MHO

Dogwood Trust Grant awards $750,000 to MHO

MHO is pleased to announce a $750,000 unrestricted operating grant from Dogwood Health Trust to support MHO’s suite of affordable housing programs and services. This investment comes at a critical time as MHO works to scale our current programs and launch innovations to meet the need for affordable housing in and around the Asheville Metro Area. While MHO has received larger capital grants – this is the largest unrestricted operating grant MHO has received in our history!

MHO gratefully acknowledges the staff and board of directors of Dogwood Health Trust for their support and collaboration.
