Fall 2017

Where did Summer go? I think everyone is asking that question. But Fall on Cape Cod is the best! This is a great time to visit the library, attend an event or two, perhaps join the Book Club (men welcome), and checkout the new books, DVDs, CDs, etc. One of the library's most popular fundraisers is the Spaghetti Supper at Jack's Outback. Make sure to mark your calendar for Sunday, October 15th. And don't worry, there is no conflict with the Patriot's game! Have a great Fall.

Book and Plant Sale -
It is always a great chance to work with the YP community

T hanks to Sue Bonnell for chairing the Book Sale and to
Sally Hockenbury for chairing the Plant Sale!

By Dinah Wolff, President

As I write this letter, we're more than halfway through summer, with fall in sight. Lawn and garden care requirements are less demanding, and another successful Summer Book & Plant Sale has come and gone. It's possible that folks don't realize just how much effort is expended on this event. Thanks to Sue Bonnell for chairing the Book Sale and to Sally Hockenbury for chairing the Plant Sale!

Getting ready for the Book Sale is an enormous undertaking. Books are donated all through the year, carried down to the cellar, inspected and sorted, boxed, carried up, carried out to the tent area, and so on. When donations include outdated, tatty, yellowed or mildewed books, these are carted off to the dump where they are either placed in containers for use overseas or simply discarded because of their condition.

Pre-sale transfer of books from the cellar to the main floor of the library has in the past been achieved with the much-appreciated assistance of Wingate*Kirkland campers, who enthusiastically do this job with all the energy a teen-age body can generate. This year, however, library volunteers arrived to oversee the project, only to learn that the camp had been flooded out and no young people would be coming. We put our 70-something backs to work, and managed to move hundreds of boxes from the cellar to the first floor, and the next morning, out to the front lawn of the library.

As for the Plant Sale portion of the Summer Sale, Sally Hockenbury spends months nurturing plants temporarily residing in her garden, and even, upon request, visits contributors to assist in digging, potting, and removing plants to be donated to the sale. We have her to thank for the condition and variety of our inventory.

Both the winter and summer sales are wonderful opportunities to work with members of the Yarmouth Port community, all of whom are devoted to the library and its continuing presence on the North Side.

Update: Annual Book & Plant Sale

A special thank you to all the volunteers!
Your support is appreciated and vital to the future of YPL.

By Sue Bonnell, Book Fair Chair

The Annual Book & Plant Sale held in July was again a rousing success! The total profits were $2,867, with $2,116 from the book sale and $751 from the plant sale.

We send a special thank you to all the volunteers who helped with setup and selling. As we are a privately-funded library, the Book & Plant Sale, the Spaghetti Supper at Jack's Outback, and the Mitten Tree at the Stroll all help greatly to supplement our membership program in providing operating funds for the library.

The library has been one of the centers of Yarmouth Port for over 150 years. In order to continue, we need, and very much appreciate, your support.

Please visit the Book Sale Corner throughout the year where you will find many recent titles. Our storage area for book donations is being cleaned and painted. We will be able to accept donations when that is completed.

Of course, newer titles, 2011-2017, may be donated now to go right on the sale shelf or into our collection.

Terrific Turnouts and Wonderful Programs -
     For Children of All Ages!

By Lynn Lesperance, Co-Librarian

It's been a busy summer here at the library, with programs for adults, families, and children. Our Reptiles Rock! program filled the Reading Room to capacity with people of all ages learning about and touching various animals. Thank you Amy Tavares of Rain Forest Reptile Shows for doing such a fantastic job. We all came away with lots of new information - and a new appreciation for some animals that often don't get much!

Amazing Horseshoe Crabs was presented in August by naturalist Jessica Sheppard of Long Pasture Wildlife Refuge. Our audience ranged in age from 1 to, well, let's just say - way over 1! Everyone learned and laughed and had a great time. A big thank you to the Mid-Cape Cultural Council for the grant which made this show possible.

Our Drop-In Legos days and Surprise Wednesday activities were lots of fun as well. It was wonderful to have families come together for those and during Sweet Storytime for stories, ice cream, and play in July and August. We hope to continue this monthly program into the fall just as long as there are those of you who want to attend.

Our first Fall Family evening promises to be a very special one. Deputy Chief Steve Xhiaros and Friends will be here to read a brand new book by Kim Roderiques and K.M. Ginter called Max and Charlie Help a Hero: Never Too Young to Give Back. Come listen to the tale and learn the story behind it. If you haven't already met DCX, here's your chance. He'll be bringing some friends along - and they might not all be human ones.

Monthly Storytime for ages 1 to 4 will resume on Friday, September 15th at 11 AM. We'll share stories, songs, activities, and playtime. We would really like to make this a weekly program. If you are interested and would attend, please, get in touch will me and I will try to make it happen.

Music and Movement with Denya will be back on the last Friday of the month at 11 AM beginning on September 29th. This program is designed for children and adults to sing and play together. Join us.

A Very Special Family Evening with Deputy Chief Xhiaros!

Wednesday, September 20 at 6 PM!

Who is going to read this brand new book?
Could it be DCX?
Which friends will be coming along?
Are they all human?

This will be a lot of fun for all ages!

It's free! Reservations are appreciated.

So Much to Do...So Little Time!

"...we continue to be busy thinking of ways to make
your library experience the best it can be!"

By Leslie Altman, Co-Librarian

Greetings from your library! Summer is drawing to a close, yet we continue to be busy thinking of ways to make your library experience the best it can be!

September features a talk by Jeannette de Beauvoir, a local Cape Cod writer, on September 15. Jeannette is the author of several mysteries, as well as historical fiction and plays. She also teaches writing. We hope you will come in to meet her and to hear about her latest books: Death of a Bear: A Provincetown Mystery and Our Lady of the Dunes. We have several of her titles in the collection, which you can check out before she arrives.

The Program Committee members are particularly interested in providing programs in service to the community. Please let us hear your suggestions. We are also interested in your ideas about books to purchase. A list of some of the new items coming in the next months can be found in this newsletter and on the YPL website. Also check out the recommended titles near the front door and add yours to the list.

Men's Book Group: I am still hoping to start a men's book group at the YPL. I know some of our patrons already belong to a group that meets at the South Yarmouth Library. We invite you and others to meet at the YPL any time the library is open. Give us a call to let us know if you're interested. Men are also welcome at the established book group, which meets on the third Thursday at 3 PM. A list of upcoming titles can be found below or on the YPL website.

As the fiscal year ends, we gather statistics on our library. You might be interested to learn some of them.

September 21: The Woman Next Door
by Yewande Omotoso (South Africa is the setting)

Hortensia James and Marion Agostino are neighbors. One is black, the other white. Both are successful women with impressive careers. Both have recently been widowed, and are living with questions, disappointments, and secrets that have brought them shame. And each has something that the woman next door deeply desires.

Sworn enemies, the two share a hedge and a deliberate hostility, which they maintain with a zeal that belies their age.

October 19: A Gentleman in Moscow
          by Amor Towles

He can't leave his hotel. You won't want to.

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

November 19: Hillbilly Elegy
         by J. D. Vance

Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis -that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside.

J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Camp Wingate*Kirkland - Happy Campers!

Fall 2017 YPL Business Sponsor Appreciation

Camp Wingate*Kirkland
79 White Rock Rd, Yarmouth Port, MA * (508) 362-3798 * campwk.com

Founded in 1957 by Joel Wolfson and David Silverman, and now run by Will and Sandy Rubenstein, Camp W*K is a co-ed, overnight, and day camp for children that offers a unique experience. It is a place where campers are inspired by community, as much as they are by the beautiful backdrop that is Cape Cod.

Wingate*Kirkland is a traditional camp in many ways, staying true to old fashioned values. And like it was 60 years ago - W*K is not a "plugged in" camp.

Some of the camp's new traditions have grown from a belief that children learn better, and are more enthusiastic, when they get to choose what they learn. The Daily Choice program is one of the most unique ideas anywhere in camping today; it offers a full range of traditional camp activities, as well as some zany stuff like Power Walk, Nature You Can Eat, Tennis Baseball, Zombie Hunters, Balloon Animal Hospital, How to Train a Dragon, and Ethical Dilemmas.

Added to these great activity choices is the fact that children are surrounded by nature and among people who really care about them. This is how they have such - as they say - happy campers!
