Gear up for the Hammerbird 5K:

A Neighborhood Celebration Returns!

The Hammerbird 5K and One Mile Fun Run/Walk is back! For the first time since 2019 (the race was held virtually in 2020), runners and walkers will pass through the Glenn Oaks neighborhood on the morning of May 4. The route passes by about 70 homes built, repaired or renovated by Habitat in the historic Boston Thurmond neighborhood.

Also returning are the most dynamically designed race t-shirts in Winston-Salem and prizes handcrafted by our own Wednesday Crew volunteers! The One Mile Fun Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m., followed by start of the 5K at 8:30.

After the race Cameron Kent, former WXII news anchor and ardent Habitat supporter, will host our awards ceremony. There will be cake squares from Dewey’s and other goodies. Kelly Mitter, Habitat’s chief operating officer, is returning as our volunteer DJ.

“We are thrilled to bring back the Hammerbird,” said George Redd, Habitat Forsyth's CEO. “Our race is unique in allowing everyone to see firsthand the impact their support makes, and continues to make, in giving families the chance to purchase quality, affordable housing and to begin building generational wealth. The most common reasons that families sign up for the Habitat program are to get out of the cost burdensome cycle of paying rent and their desire to leave behind a home for their children and grandchildren. Since our founding in 1985, we have built, renovated or repaired homes for more than 550 local families.”

Experiencing the vibrant neighborhood is one reason runners and walkers return multiple years, despite the steep 23rd Street hill! Pat Stoeber, who recently turned 85, has run the Hammerbird a number of times. “I love the Hammerbird 5K because of the homeowners who volunteer or come out in their yards to cheer us on as we pass by their homes.”

Mary Comer, who has volunteered for Hammerbird and run the race multiple times, says the race is one of her favorites. “The Hammerbird course has beautiful views of downtown, it’s easy to park and get to the start line, and it’s fun!”

Those who register for the 5K and One Mile events by April 6 will get the early-bird registration price of $25 and be guaranteed a t-shirt in their chosen size. Online registration ends Wednesday, May 1, at midnight. Packet pick-up with be at Fleet Feet on Harvey Street on Friday, May 3, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Service Inspiration: From AmeriCorps Interest to Building Homes

Erin's interest in AmeriCorps sparked after listening to a friend share their firsthand encounter in the Peace Corps. Seven months in, she's honed her construction skills at Habitat Forsyth.

"I had the desire to serve in a way I had never done before and when I found the construction position with Habitat for Humanity, it felt right. So far my experience here has been unique and eventful. I have most enjoyed working with people from all over and learning about their life while helping them learn what I have been working on for the past few months," said Erin. She continued, "Knowing the work I am a part of is helping families in need and giving them a better quality of life is very rewarding. My favorite part in the process is helping the concrete get poured and leveled and then watching the family get presented their new home at the dedication."

Habitat AmeriCorps is part of the growing national service movement. In partnership with Habitat organizations throughout the U.S., our program places AmeriCorps members to serve in the field and in the office to build and repair homes, expand housing services and engage the community. A service term with Habitat provides hands-on nonprofit experience that allows members to learn and develop lifelong skills and confidence. Our members serve a critical role in helping Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build a better future for themselves and their families.

There are many benefits available to serving with Habitat AmeriCorps, including a post-service award for student loans or educational expenses. If you are interested in spending 10-1/2 months serving with the Habitat Forsyth construction team as an AmeriCorps member, contact Debbie Cesta at debbie.cesta@habitatforsyth.org.

Blossoming Dreams:

Journey to Homeownership

Being a single mother of two children, Ms. Boykins works diligently to put her family’s needs above her own. To complete the requirements for the Habitat homeownership program, Ms. Boykins began work at 5 a.m. as a full-time cake decorator and was also a part-time school bus driver in the afternoon.

Through Habitat’s homeownership program, Ms. Boykins has gained valuable insight into the small and large details that go into owning a home. She says, “It’s been fun in a lot of ways, and I’ve learned so many new things. We’ve learned how a house is built, and how the walls and flooring are put in. We’ve learned about saving money. Habitat teaches you a lot about life.”

YEP! Explores Cultural Heritage

Habitat Forsyth's Youth Empowerment Program (YEP!) had the unique opportunity to delve into the rich cultural tapestry at Charlotte's Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture.

The visit wasn't just a typical outing—it was an immersive experience in African-American history, art, and identity. From thought-provoking exhibits to engaging workshops, the Gantt Center provided a platform for deep exploration and reflection.

In addition to exploring the exhibits,YEP! participants also took part in an augmented reality workshop, adding a modern twist to their cultural exploration. Through this innovative experience, they further expanded their understanding of African-American history and its relevance in contemporary society.
