NATIONAL EAT OUTSIDE DAY
Friends, fresh air, and good food are the focus of National Eat Outside Day every year on August 31. Whether at home, a park, a favorite restaurant or food truck, or the beach, food just tastes better when we eat it under the open sky.
Many foods lend themselves to eating outdoors but sometimes it's as simple as taking your prepared plate out to the balcony, porch, or patio. Also known as al fresco dining, many restaurants offer patio seating so their patrons can enjoy their meals while taking in the city, beach, countryside or just people watch. Even more temperate climates offer seasonal outdoor dining.
Eat Outside Day encourages you to taste the sunshine (or the moonlight) while eating your meal. It's like a mini stay-cation where you get to recharge while enjoying a delicious feast outdoors.

Bunge to infuse $1B in New Orleans area, grow Avondale palm oil facility to biggest in US
CityBusiness staff reports//August 30, 2024//
Bunge, a tropical and specialty oil facility in Avondale, is expanding to offer a broader portfolio of products, increasing employment opportunities by 10 percent and making a significant capital investment into the project. Jefferson Parish leaders say the announcement positions Jefferson Parish as a global destination for food product manufacturing.
Bunge, with registered office in Geneva, Switzerland, and its corporate headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, is a global leader in agribusiness, food and ingredients, specifically oilseed processing and a producer and supplier of specialty plant-based oils and fat, working in partnerships with farmers.
In April 2023, the company completed the purchase of Fuji Vegetable Oil’s newly-constructed refinery, strategically located in IMTT’s (International-Matex Tank Terminals) Avondale Terminal. The new facility provided Bunge with a scalable, port-based footprint capable of connecting North American food, feed and fuel customers to global markets.
The expansion will include a new vegetable oil processing line as well as additional structures to support increased production at the facility. Bunge currently employs 50 people at the 15-acre plant. The amplified output will require additional employees to be hired at Bunge.

Welcome to college football’s season of change.
Three tumultuous years filled with conference realignment, playoff expansion and various reforms come to life in 2024.
How much is new? Enough to rank the Top 25 changes you’ll see in college football this season.
1) The College Football Playoff expands from four to 12 teams.
2) The national championship game will be played Jan. 20, making this the longest season in college football history. The season starts Aug. 24 with four games involving major college teams, including Georgia Tech vs. No. 10 Florida State in Dublin, Ireland.
3) Postseason games on campus. After decades of nothing but bowl games at the highest level of Division I college football, four first-round playoff games will be hosted by the higher seeds on Dec. 19 and 20.
4) The SEC adds Texas and Oklahoma.
5) The Big Ten goes West and adds USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington to become an 18-team conference.

Check Out These 10 Medical Terms Explained!
Published on August 31, 2024
Credit: Hush Naidoo Jade Photography
Have you ever had a doctor explain that you "suffer from otitis" to simply mean you have an ear inflammation? The terminology used by doctors can be very confusing to patients, as medical words are full of roots, prefixes, and suffixes that come from Greek or Latin. If you want to understand your doctor better during your next visit, or just show off your lexicon to your friends, read on! Today, we are reviewing and explaining what these 10 aspects of medical terminology mean.
1Hypo-
Credit: isens usa
"Hypo-" is a prefix that comes from Greek, meaning "under" or "below."
In medicine, this term is used to refer to low levels or deficient functioning.
For example, you may see this prefix in "Hypoglycemia" (low blood sugar) or "Hypotension" (low blood pressure). To refer to an organ or gland that is below its normal function, we have the word "Hypothyroidism" as an example, which indicates an underactive thyroid gland.
2Hyper-
Credit: Mockup Graphics
"Hyper-" is the opposite of the previous prefix. Hyper- also comes from Greek, meaning "excessive" or "above normal."
This prefix is used when levels, functioning, or certain conditions are elevated or above values considered normal. For example, "Hyperthermia" refers to elevated body temperature. "Hypertension" is blood pressure that exceeds the values indicated as healthy. Finally, "Hyperthyroidism" is the overactivity of the thyroid gland, which leads to the overproduction of thyroid hormones.
3-itis
Credit: Kelly Sikkema
"-itis" is one of the best-known suffixes in medicine. Greek is again the language of origin here, this time meaning "inflammation."
Doctors often add this suffix to the scientific name of a body part to indicate it is swollen. As already mentioned, "Otitis" is the inflammation of the ear, as frequent as it is painful. "Appendicitis" indicates inflammation of the appendix, often resulting in surgery to remove it. Another example is "Bronchitis," which refers to inflammation of the bronchial tubes.
4Gastro-
Credit: julien Tromeur
"Gastro-" is a prefix that, rather than referring to a condition, injury, or disease, indicates a specific body part where all those things can occur.
Gastro- comes from Greek and means "stomach" or "tummy." Therefore, this term refers to conditions, procedures, or tests that affect or are performed on the stomach or gastrointestinal tract.
For example -using one of the suffixes already mentioned above- we have the term "Gastritis," the inflammation of the stomach, which causes so much pain. "Gastroenterology," on the other hand, is the general study of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract.
5-osis
Credit: Online Marketing
"-osis" is a suffix that comes to indicate that something is not working as it should or was affected in some way.
Coming from Greek, "-osis" can mean "condition," "disease," or "abnormal."
For example, we can cite "Fibrosis," the formation of excess fibrous connective tissue, which can occur in some scars. On the other hand, "Thrombosis" is a well-known term indicating the presence of a blood clot (thrombus) within a blood vessel.
6Osteo-
Credit: Mathew Schwartz
Like "Gastro-," "Osteo-" indicates a specific part or area of the human body.
This prefix comes from the Greek osteon meaning "bone." Thus, any medical term that includes this prefix indicates a condition, disease, procedure, or treatment that affects or is applied to the bones.
For example, "Osteoporosis" combines this prefix with the familiar "-osis" suffix, indicating a condition characterized by porous and fragile bones. On the other hand, "Osteotomy" refers to a surgical procedure on a bone.
7-scopy
Credit: Piron Guillaume
The Greek skopein, meaning "to look" or "to examine," gives rise to the medical suffix "-scopy."
Following its word of origin, the suffix "-scopy" doesn't refer to a disease or body part but to an examination or viewing of some organ or function.
To give some examples, we can mention the well-known "Endoscopy," a procedure through which an internal part of the body is examined using a flexible tube with a lamp and camera attached. "Bronchoscopy," on the other hand, indicates the examination of bronchi.
8Hemat-
Credit: Anton
Originating from the Greek haima, any medical word that includes the prefix "Hemat-" refers to something related to blood.
"Hematology," for example, is the science that studies the blood, its functions, its elements, and the conditions or diseases that can affect it. "Hematoma" is a bit of blood that collects in a certain spot because it has escaped from blood vessels, commonly known as a bruise. "Hematopoiesis," on its part, refers to the process by which new blood cells are formed.
9-ology
Credit: Look Studio
We have to admit we've left a few spoilers, as the suffix "-ology" was mentioned before. But let's take a better look at it.
Coming from the Greek logos ("study" or "reason"), "-ology" applies to different medical fields dedicated to studying specific parts or functions of our body.
One of the best known, "Cardiology," is the study and care of the heart and related conditions. Another example is the word "Dermatology," the area of medicine that studies and treats the skin.
10-ectomy
Credit: Martha Dominguez de Gouveia
The suffix "-ectomy" indicates a surgical procedure. Coming from the Greek ektomē, meaning "a cutting out" or "excision," practices ending with this suffix are performed to remove a specific body part.
While that sounds a bit strong, these types of surgeries are actually very common, and many of them are performed quickly. "Appendectomy," for example, involves the surgical removal of an infected appendix. There are other examples, such as "Mastectomy," which is the surgical removal of breast tissue.

NATIONAL TRAIL MIX DAY
Observed annually on August 31, National Trail Mix Day honors the mix developed as a healthy snack for long hikes.
Filled with nuts, dried fruit, and grains, trail mix packs a boost of carbohydrates when the body needs it most. The nuts supply good fats as well as sustained energy, too. Since it's lightweight, trail mix travels easily, as well. On long trails or while camping, trail mix keeps without spoiling since most of the ingredients are dried.
Two California surfers claim the creation of trail mix. In 1968, they blended peanuts and raisins for an energy snack. However, in the 1958 novel The Dharma Bums written by Jack Kerouac, the two main characters mention trail mix when planning meals for their hiking trip.
Trail mix is sometimes referred to as Gorp.
Trail Mix Tips
Regardless of who created trail mix, the food is an integral part of camping, hiking, and outdoor life. When preparing for a hike, selecting a favorite combination of ingredients comes down to balancing flavor and nutrition. Some factors to keep in mind:
- Portability - Be sure all the components can withstand heat and bouncing around. For example, potato chips and caramel baking bits probably won't survive the heat. However, pretzel rods, M&Ms, and other candy-coated chocolates hold up under stress.
- Protein - Choosing the right nuts and seeds adds healthy proteins and fats, too. Consider adding these top protein-producing seeds and nuts to your trail mix: almonds, peanuts, pistachios, hemp, pepito, sunflower, flax, sesame, chia, cashews, walnuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts
-
Salty & Sweet - Not only does the flavor factor increase but the salt, along with drinking plenty of water throughout your hike prevents dehydration. When we sweat, we lose essential electrolytes, and trail mix helps to replenish them. The salt comes from the ingredients already added to the mix. There's no need to add more. And the sweet? Well, that all depends on your tastes. How much additional glucose do your physical needs require?
- Spice - Ramp up the flavor profile with some spice. Here are a few combinations to try: Fall blend - cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, ginger Savory blend- garlic powder, dill, lemon pepper Spicy blend - wasabi, mustard powder, lemon pepper, dried cilantro, dried lime zest Spicy sweet blend - paprika, cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, a touch of brown sugar
- Energy Booster - For a twist, add chocolate-covered roasted coffee beans to your mix. They're especially nice if time is short or it's impossible to make a cup of java while roughing it. You'll get your caffeine and your breakfast while seeking the next fantastic view.

What does "palaver" mean?
Clear thinking
Fast movement
Prolonged idle talk
Quick decision
Definition: Prolonged idle talk or conversation; a lengthy discussion or debate, often characterized by a lack of substance or purpose.
Origin: The term originates from the Spanish word "palabre," meaning "word," which evolved from the Portuguese "palavra." It entered the English language in the mid-17th century, initially referring to idle chatter or discussion among traders and later adopting a broader meaning.
Example: After hours of palaver about the upcoming project, they realized they had yet to make any concrete decisions.
"Palaver" refers to prolonged idle talk, which can often be seen as excessive discussion without meaningful outcomes. This term captures the essence of conversations that meander without purpose, where participants engage in chatter rather than constructive dialogue. It suggests a sense of aimlessness, where the focus drifts away from relevant topics, leading to a lack of resolution or clarity. Often used to describe situations in casual or social contexts, "palaver" highlights the tendency to engage in talk that, while sometimes entertaining, ultimately contributes little to progress or understanding in a given matter.

Circa 1933 in Akron, Ohio, workers are seen precariously perched on super-tall ladders while constructing the USS Macon, a cutting-edge airship of its time. As one of the largest dirigibles ever built, the USS Macon represented a significant leap in aviation technology and naval reconnaissance. The towering ladders highlight the colossal scale of the airship and the meticulous effort required for its assembly. This scene captures not just the technological ambition of the era but also the remarkable skill and bravery of the workers involved in bringing such an engineering marvel to life.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

FALL RHYTHM & ROSES CONCERTS ANNOUNCED
Jon Cleary Kicks Off Star-Studded Line-Up for Friday Concerts
The Historic BK House & Gardens is offering music afficionados a special treat this fall with a new Rhythm & Roses Concert Series, extending the popular spring concerts into September, October and November. British-born, American funk and R&B musician Jon Cleary will kick off the series with a solo performance on Friday, September 27, at 6 pm. Cleary, an accomplished pianist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter, will perform from 6-9 pm in the beautifully manicured BK House Parterre Garden, 1113 Chartres Street.
Rhythm & Roses, presented by BK house neighbor and benefactor James Douglas Hislop, will run through Friday, November 1, except for October 11, and will feature a wide array of popular New Orleans talents. The opening concert will be presented in part by NOLAxNOLA.
Future dates include:
October 4: Jason Neville Funky Soul Band
October 18: Helen Gillet and Rebelle Musique
October 25: Dusky Waters & Rachel Maxann
November 1: Jelly Joseph
Tickets are priced at $30 for nonmembers and $25 for BK members and are available at www.bkhouse.org. Food and beverages will be sold on site. Because beverage sales support on-going maintenance of the garden, outside beverages will not be permitted.
Concert-goers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance due to anticipated popularity of the event and size of the historic setting. Limited seating will be provided; however, attendees may bring small chairs provided space allows.
Also in September, BK House will host the second annual Beautiful Spaces Symposium on Saturday, September 14, focusing on the legacy of gardens in New Orleans.
