All Members, Let’s Talk!
New time to talk with the WILPF US President and other leaders and members
Before and/or after the Program Committee meeting call on Tuesday evening, January 5
Join us Tuesday, January 5, to ask questions, share ideas, and talk with other WILPFers nationwide, at a new time: one hour before and/or one hour after the Program Committee meeting call. You’re welcome to call in before the likely 2-hour committee meeting. The open-to-all call is at 4 pm Pacific Time / 7 pm Eastern Time – and/or stay for an hour afterward, starting at 7 pm PT / 10 pm ET.
What questions or suggestions do you have, about WILPF US functioning, activities, or about our program work? This is a chance for WILPF members to speak up! Also, you’re encouraged to listen in to the Program Committee meeting: 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET until 7 pm PT / 10 pm ET.
You must be registered for this call. If you have been on an open WILPF US Program call before, you are already pre-registered for this one. Otherwise, or if you are not sure, please register ASAP by clicking here to be able to call in on January 5 All who are registered should receive a reminder email from Michael on Monday evening, January 4. If you don’t, please register again.
Why should I call in to talk/listen before and/or after the Program Committee call?
In these conversations you’ll be able to comment on and/or ask about national and international WILPF. You’ll have the chance to talk with other branch and at-large members, as well as the President and other WILPF US leaders. Additionally, between these two calls that welcome the participation of all members, you’re welcome to listen in to the Program Committee call. Maybe you’ll have questions to ask after that meeting, in the second part of the all-member conversations.
In these before/after conversations, we’ll ask for your ideas, share program-related information, and invite your commitment. If you’re ready, you can volunteer to join a national committee, to be an issue committee contact for your branch and/or to become an issue committee member!
Join in the Program Committee Meeting Call, Too!
We invite you to listen in to the Program Committee (starting at 5 pm PT / 8 pm ET). You’ll hear about upcoming plans and learn how you can get involved in national WILPF issue committees and/or the WILPF US Call for Peace – either in your own branch’s initiative or helping with national resource research.
Get Connected with an Issue Committee!
Each of our national issue committees welcomes new members. You can help develop issue-related actions for WILPF members.
Our Call for Peace: Global Ceasefire and Military Spending Cuts
Wars and military activities kill or injure thousands of people every year, pollute the planet, and accelerate global heating and climate chaos. The US military alone produces more greenhouse gas emissions than up to 140 countries! Climate chaos especially harms poor people, women, and children.
The WILPF US Call for Peace supports:
-
a permanent extension of the current UN Global Ceasefire (unanimously approved by the United Nations Security Council on July 1, 2020)
-
a 50% cut from the entirety of US military spending
We’re looking to reduce US military spending, to identify targeted items for 50% cuts. Already, volunteers have begun to review where to move that money, for human needs. Current “unsupported” military spending could fund many programs serving people, thus supporting true US security and building a foundation for sustained and lasting peace.
Hear More about the Poor People’s Campaign and Our New WILPF US Website
The Poor People's Campaign (PPC) has already developed a Moral Budget, with proposals for a 50% cut in the Department of Defense budget alone. Hear information and updates from our PPC liaisons. To learn more about the PPC, see their webpage.
Our new website will roll out in March. On it, each issue committee will have a greatly expanded webpage with a calendar of events, requested strategic actions – designated at different “action levels” – and even more additional features.
I’m hoping you can join us to talk together on Tuesday, January 5, 2021!
—Joan Goddard, WILPF US national Program Chair.
