Hello Business,

In the twenty third week of ordinary time there is a recounting of the healing of a deaf man with speech disabilities. This story is a reminder that we need to be open to the Word of the Lord and move away from our spiritual deafness to God and His plan for us.

We are encouraged to not be prejudicial to others by their outward appearance of wealth or the lack of wealth. We as Christians are summoned to live our faith by treating everyone with equality, kindness, empathy, and compassion.

We are reminded to have faith in God no matter what is happening in our private lives or even in the global state of the world. God is in control, and we should take comfort in that.

We had some technical issues last week with recording Fr. Bill's homily. The link will send you to the previous weeks homily. We do have some additional information provided by Fr. Bill on the point of hypocrisy from last week's homily.

HYPOCRISY

Middle East culture in the ancient days was based upon a system of honor and shame. A respectable person at the time would do anything in order to avoid being shamed in front of the community. As a result, hypocrisy was morally condemned because the hypocrite (ὑποκριτής) was seen as a phony, a pretender, and untrustworthy.

In the gospel (Mark 7:1-23) last weekend, Jesus condemns the religious leaders as hypocrites because they were following the letter of the Law but not its spirit. They were criticizing people for failing to follow every tenet of the Law instead of showing people loving kindness which is what the Law required.

In the 7th century AD, there was a Muslim leader named Abdullah ibn Amr, who was a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Regarding the issue of hypocrisy among the Muslim people, he wrote:

There are four signs that make someone a pure hypocrite and whoever has them has a characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it: (1) when he speaks he lies; (2) when he makes a covenant he is treacherous; (3) when he makes a promise he breaks it; and (4) when he argues he is wicked.

Abdullah ibn Amr died in Egypt in 683 AD

QCD

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows individuals who are 70½ years old or older to donate up to $105,000 total to one or more charities directly from a taxable IRA instead of taking their required minimum distributions.

RMD

Required minimum distributions (RMDs) are the minimum amounts you must withdraw from your retirement accounts each year. You generally must start taking withdrawals from your traditional IRA, SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, and retirement plan accounts when you reach age 72.

If you are over 72 years of age you qualify to take annual distributions from your retirement account to make tax free donations to charities of your choice.

Resurrection Church is a qualified public charity 501(c)(3) and can receive your QCD.

We thank you in advance for considering Resurrection Catholic Church and School as recipients of your donations.
