A holiday date can look comfortably far away until you put the household calendar beside it. The guest room may be needed before Thanksgiving dinner. The living room may become the Christmas-tree room as soon as the dishes are put away. A dining table might still be a workspace every weekday. The useful painting deadline is the day that room needs to return to its normal job, with furniture back and access restored—not simply the date printed on the calendar.
That changes the order of the conversation. For a household decorating the week after Thanksgiving, November 16–20 is the last full workweek before Thanksgiving to discuss for suitable living-room work; an earlier decorating date calls for an earlier plan. Guest rooms and a home’s only bathroom deserve planning about two weeks ahead of the holiday or guest arrival. In a home with another usable bathroom, the week before guests arrive may be workable. A foyer may fit closer to the holiday. Those are planning guides, not promised project durations: preparation, drying and the way your household uses the space still matter. Avoid planning kitchen disruption during the week before Thanksgiving or Christmas.
