Homeowner's Son Visits Panama

Mark Carnall, a student at Sierra Academy of Expeditionary Learning and son of Habitat homeowner Liz Carnall, has recently returned from a trip to Panama. He was selected to participate in a Service Learning trip to the Mamoni Preserve. The students were selected based on academic and character excellence and were required to raise the funds for their trip. Mark worked over the summer and sold one of his musical instruments to raise funds for the trip.

Mark (third from left in picture above) was one of thirteen students who worked on the Mamoni Preserve. One of the things he learned was to cut bamboo with a machete and use it to build platforms. In addition to working, the students saw the Panama Canal and went hiking and snorkeling.

Mark says this trip was life-changing! Seeing a different culture and how other people live in the world broadened his perspective. He sees more clearly how much he has to be thankful for and how much opportunity he has available.
Meet the Executive Director
After serving as Nevada County Habitat for Humanity’s Director of Fund development for nine years, Lorraine Larson took over as Executive Director in May of 2018. Lorraine started her career in international trade and high tech during the 1980s. After deciding to pursue more service-focused work, Lorraine went back to school and completed Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Sociology. After graduation Lorraine worked at a large Silicon Valley nonprofit serving the elderly and their caregivers. She ran several direct service programs including fundraising efforts.

Lorraine moved to Nevada County in 2006 and after consulting for several years found a perfect fit in working with Habitat! When she’s not at work, Lorraine Enjoys cooking, swimming in the summer, and growing vegetables year round. Lorraine loves this community, and especially loves walking around the downtown areas in Nevada City and Grass Valley.
Money Matters
Many NC Habitat homeowners have lower mortgage payments due to a Second Note (CalHome loan) that becomes due when the First Note (the mortgage) is paid off. The amount of this Second Note is in your initial paperwork as well as in your Annual Mortgage Summary. The Second Note is listed as “Other Debt”.

Every homeowner with a Second Note needs to be preparing to pay it off in full when your home is paid off. Several homeowners are making monthly payments. Those homeowners not making monthly payments should plan to put funds aside to be ready when your last mortgage payment is made. For more information contact Lisa Hooper at the Habitat office.
