Welcome to Carpe Datum’s weekly newsletter, the Federal Data Prospector, the only publication of its kind dedicated exclusively to data and analytics companies that share our passion for serving the public sector. Our featured items begin with a data request from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency seeking a subscription to detailed visitation data for american recreational areas. The requirements call for detailed visit information, visitor origins by census tract, and the ability to add and view data using GIS.

  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — Data product that includes human mobility data - The scope of the datasets, or data accessible through a platform, will provide data at least representative of locations in the United States including up to 10,000 beach boundaries and 200 park units from the NPS, NFS and FWS ownership boundaries. The time window of comparable data should include at least January 2018 – December 2024. With non-historical data deliveries on a regular interval (monthly or quarterly) until the end of the subscription window.

In other data news, on July 16th, Biometric Update published an article entitled USSOCOM’s brave new exploitation of the bad guys’ biometrics. In this story, Anthony Kimery describes USSOCOM's exploration of a long-term partnership with academic institutions to develop advanced biometric, forensic, and digital identities exploitation technologies for counterterrorism and counterintelligence operations.

  • 'Data and what the United States does with data will enable, and be a critical driver of, what the future of U.S. counterterrorism looks like,' Don Rassler (an assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Director of Strategic Initiatives, U.S. Military Academy at West Point) pointed out. And 'to prepare for that future, the United States needs to figure out how it can more effectively harness, extract more meaning from, and make more efficient and timely use of the vast stockpiles of terrorism-related data it has, and will continue to acquire, in the years ahead.'”
