KICKOFF SUCCESS
2025 FActoIds Game Commences!
| | |
On Saturday, September 13, Rocky Mountain BEST and Front Range BEST co-hosted Kickoff Day at STEM School Highlands Ranch. Leaders from each hub helped facilitate the Kickoff Assembly, welcoming coaches and students from 31 teams, presenting the FActoIds game animation, revealing the game field, and providing an overview of the game rules.
Teams also picked up kits, then participated in workshops that covered topics related to the game and deliverables, including programming with the new VEX V5 brain, navigating the new engineering notebook requirements and scoring guides, strategies for pursuing the BEST award, basics of building and robot assembly, and more!
Rocky Mountain BEST has 20 teams competing this season, including four rookie teams.
We are so excited to see what teams do with this year's game!

MEET THE BOARD & STEERING TEAM
Each month, we will highlight members of our leadership team who work behind the scenes to make BEST happen
| | |
Meet Lois Walton, Board Treasurer & Head Scorekeeper
Q: How did you get involved with BEST? What roles have you served in?
Way back at the 2010 beginning...a couple from the Denver area had participated in BEST in Wichita, Kansas and thought it would be worthwhile to bring it to Colorado. He presented to our retirees association and pled his case. Then someone from the national organization came and presented more formally and several of us were hooked!
I helped start RM BEST a few years after I retired. So, I have been with it from its beginnings here in Colorado.
I have been a member of the board, and board treasurer since that time. I am basically the BEST bookkeeper. I also head up the scorekeeping for the robot competition and enjoy doing that, although it can sometimes be stressful. Over the years, I have also had roles leading the volunteer newsletter and teacher/mentor presentations at Kickoff and help Lori with outreach when needed.
| |
Q: What jobs did you previously have before retiring?
I began as a math teacher in a junior high in Denver Public Schools where I found that the discipline worried me too much. I quit, started a family (two girls) and returned to school for a masters in Applied math. Then I began working for Hughes Aircraft (later purchased by Raytheon) in software maintenance of Assembly Language programs (which I loved – solving puzzles where the software failed for some reason and making it work!). Over the years I worked on development projects and in the end was a System Engineer for a software system.
| |
Q: What are some things you do for fun in your life beyond BEST?
I love to take long walks and hikes. I used to do a lot of knitting and crocheting, and expect to return to that when I ramp down my BEST participation. I love scuba diving and try to do that once per year, although that hasn’t worked out recently. I’d like to visit more national parks and do some more car travel.
Q: What do you love most about BEST?
I love to see the different robots and strategies that the teams come up with!
| | SPONSOR HIGHLIGHT: FORESTERS | | Grants for Kits, Field & Team Tools | |
Foresters Financial is a fraternal benefit society headquartered in Toronto that provides life insurance and other financial solutions in Canada, the UK, and the US. In 2024, Foresters reached 150 years in business. The company’s structure as a fraternal organization also includes benefits such as discounted legal services, scholarships, and community grants.
RM BEST is especially appreciative of the community grants provided by Foresters both this year and last year!! We'd like to give a shout out to Cathy Auman for her work in submitting the applications and for her significant help and support of RM BEST.
In addition to providing support for our kits, Foresters also provided a grant to purchase tools for three rookie teams to ensure they have everything they need for a successful season! Volunteers with the Foresters will also be on hand on Practice Day to work with these teams and provide additional support.
| | |
On August 16, RMB had a work day to get supplies that were purchased with grant money from the Foresters ready for kits. We especially want to thank Cathy Auman and Tanis Humes for their support! Cathy wrote the grant to support RM BEST, and Tanis is a Branch Councilor for Foresters. Other volunteers were present and much was accomplished!

OUTREACH HIGHLIGHTS
Teams in the Community
| | In early September, RM BEST supported Monarch High School (Team 1314) with an outreach event, lending our outreach robot so that team members could share their love of BEST with community members from both their high school and the neighboring K-8 school. We love getting to support local teams with their endeavors! | | | More than 37 students test-drove the outreach robot during the 1.5 hour event! | |
