Paper, paper, paper and an abundance of options....

So many papers! How does one choose?

Paper is made from a host of diverse materials, including cotton, mulberry bark, linen, and even plastic (BPA free, that is). Parchment and Vellum were originally made from animal skins. Your typical sketchbook paper is made from acid-free alpha cellulose, or wood pulp with the natural lignin removed to prevent yellowing.

Fun fact: rice paper is not actually made from rice

(unless we’re talking about the edible kind). “Rice” is just a reference to a paper’s translucency, usually some variety of mulberry paper.

The plot thickens when you consider things like weight, sizing, and texture. You might have noticed a weight designation of some kind on a sketchbook or a box of printer paper. Weight is gauged in both pounds (lb) and grams per square meter (gsm). Pounds refers to the weight of 500 sheets of that paper. GSM is similar, but more accurate since it also accounts for sheet length and width. The term Sizing refers to additives, such as gelatin and (ick) rabbit skin glue that affects the papers' absorbency and surface adhesion. As for Texture, papers on the rough side have catchy names like, vellum, cold-pressed, and well, rough. On the smooth side you have hot-pressed, plate, and just plain smooth.

When choosing a paper, consider your medium, as it will behave differently on different papers. If you’re a fan of fine detail, stay on the smooth side. Like to use pens and markers? Find something on the smoother and less absorbent side, like marker or mixed media paper. Most papers can have more than one application. For instance, 100% cotton hot-pressed watercolor paper can also be used for drawing and printmaking. Arches (technically pronounced “Arsh”) Rives BFK is a popular go to for printmakers, but has also been used in painting. Stonehenge (100% cotton) is great for graphite, charcoal, and pastel, but it’s also great for screen printing and lithography. Some 100% cotton papers can even be primed for oil painting. Papers made from mulberry bark fiber are often used in relief and intaglio printing. This is merely the tip of the paper-berg, but hopefully some help in choosing the right paper for your next project.

🎶 🖼 📀 🎥 🤩

This weeks amazing, creative, artsy music videos for you to enjoy.

The White Stripes’ influential frame by frame music video directed by Michel Gondry used LEGO animation which audiences and critics felt enhanced the lyrics to great effect.

Unable to have the LEGO company involved in their video the band had to purchase boxes and boxes of the product for use.

Rodger Cameron, Senior Designer at LEGO, was quoted with "Having worked in animation a bit, knowing what goes on, how many frames a second animation takes, I was blown away by the work they put into it…People come up to me and ask if I've seen 'the Lego video.' It's good to be part of the company when there is something out there that is such a great creation."
