Superintendent's Weekly Message

Dear HBCSD Families,

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible PTO for hosting such an amazing Staff Appreciation Week, and to HBEF for a wonderful Hearts of Hermosa event on Saturday night. Both organizations truly exemplify the spirit of Hermosa Beach—a small-town community where everyone comes together to support our students, teachers, staff, and schools.

“It takes a village to raise a child,” and we are so fortunate for this village.

These events are true highlights of the year and make our HBCSD staff feel so special and deeply supported for all of their hard work and dedication to our children.

It’s not too late to support HBEF and the programs that make HBCSD so exceptional—visit hbef.org today to donate.

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Hermosa View School Principal News

Dear View Families,

Thank you so much for the love and gratitude you showed to our staff. We felt incredibly appreciated by the community we care about so deeply. Your kindness and support mean more than words can express.

Most of all, thank you for trusting us with your most precious gifts — your children. It is truly an honor to serve this special community and to partner with you in helping our students learn, grow, and thrive each day.

Looking ahead, we are excited for our next Flag Assembly on May 15 at 9:00 a.m. We will enjoy special performances from Ms. Speese and Ms. Corman’s class, as well as Ms. Hunter’s class. During the assembly, we will also recognize students who have been “surfing” at Hermosa View and students who have demonstrated excellent attendance by arriving on time every day.

Please note that our next earthquake safety drill will take place on Tuesday as we continue practicing important safety procedures with our students.

We also look forward to welcoming families to Open House on May 21 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Preschool families are invited to attend from 8:00–8:45 a.m. on this minimum day.

Thank you again for your continued partnership and support. We are so grateful to be part of such a caring and connected school community.

Warmly,

Dr. Jessica Ghobrial

Hermosa View Principal / HB Preschool Director

Hermosa Vista School Principal News

Dear Vista Families,

Thank you for such a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week! I truly felt appreciated, and I know our teachers did as well. Our community has shown up in so many thoughtful ways to express support and gratitude for the teachers and staff who make Vista such a special place.

As we began CAASPP testing this week, students came prepared, focused, and ready to do their best. Please continue encouraging students to put forth their best effort, get a good night’s sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast so they are ready to show what they know during testing. We also appreciate everyone helping to minimize interruptions on campus during this important testing period.

We will also be holding our final Principal Advisory Committee meeting of the year. Thank you to the parent volunteers who dedicated their time to providing valuable community input and engaging in collaborative discussions around PBIS, curriculum, the School Safety Plan, and our School Accountability Report Card. I truly appreciated hearing parent perspectives and partnering together to support our school community.

As the year is coming to an end, I would like to put some important dates on your radar:

CAASPP TESTING: Parent Tips

  • Explain to your child that these tests are used as tools to help them learn, and that they should not be anxious or scared.
  • Remind your child that you and their teacher want them to try their very best and are there to help, every step of the way.
  • Ensure they get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time each day. Attendance is key.
  • Explore the practice tests with your child on the CAASPP and ELPAC Practice and Training web page so they can become familiar with the platform and setup of the tests.

To learn more about these tests go to the CAASPP Starting Smarter website or review the CDE Parent Guides to Understanding web page.

Hermosa Valley School Principal News

Dear Valley Families,

First and foremost, a huge thank you to all of our families for making Staff Appreciation Week so incredibly special. Our staff felt truly spoiled by the thoughtful treats, kind notes, and generous support throughout the week. We feel very lucky to work in a community that so positively supports educators and school staff. We love your children, and it is a great honor to spend each day with them.

Student IDs at Lunch

As a reminder, please ensure students are bringing their school ID cards to the snack and lunch lines each day. This is important for accurate bookkeeping and student safety. Students who do not bring their ID card will need to wait until all students with IDs have received their lunch before obtaining their own. We are working to build strong habits and muscle memory around this expectation and appreciate your support.

Elective Selection Review

Families of incoming 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students — on Friday, you received an email asking you to review the electives your child selected for next school year. Please review their selections in their entirety and complete the Google Form indicating that you have reviewed and agree with the choices submitted.

Aerospace Club Rocket Launch

This upcoming Tuesday, our 5th Grade Aerospace Club, led by Mr. Kaplan and Mira Costa High School student Atticus O’Neill, will be launching the rockets students constructed this year. The rockets are expected to reach heights of 800–1000 feet! If you are interested in joining us, please meet at Mr. Kaplan’s room at 3:00 PM for a 3:15 PM departure. We are incredibly proud of the students who participated in this outstanding after-school opportunity.

Forum Music Festival

Our Hermosa Valley Band will be traveling to the Forum Music Festival this Friday to perform for a panel of distinguished music adjudicators. We wish our musicians the very best of luck and cannot wait to hear about their experience!

CAASPP Testing

Our Valley students have been hard at work completing CAASPP testing. Thank you to our families for ensuring students are arriving well-rested and well-fed each day. We look forward to celebrating individual student growth when results are released this summer.

Honor Roll Breakfast

Our Honor Roll Breakfast will take place on May 28th. This is a student-only event unless you previously volunteered to support the morning. Students invited to attend earned a 3.5 GPA or higher during both Trimester 1 and Trimester 2. All invited students should have received an email invitation with additional details surrounding the event. We look forward to celebrating their hard work and accomplishments.

Celebrating Our Student Athletes

Last week, I had the great honor of attending the inaugural SBSSA Middle School Surf Off. Our students were fantastic — what an impressive group of athletes led by our wonderful surf coach, Jani Lange.

We will have our final girls flag football and boys volleyball games this week as well. We would love to see you at our home game on Monday from 3:30–5:00 PM. It is always so much fun to cheer on our amazing students together as a community.

Thank you, as always, for your continued partnership and support.

Warmly,

Jessica Bledsoe
