There’s a song by Larnell Harris that I love to listen to, and every time I hear it, these words reach deep into my heart:
I miss my time with you; those moments together; I need to be with you each day, but it hurts me when you say you're too busy. Busy trying to serve me, but how can you serve me when your spirit's empty?
Those lyrics remind me—especially when I’ve gotten too busy—that before I can write for God, I must sit with God. If I’m going to be used effectively as a writer for His kingdom, I can’t afford to let that time slip.
John’s illustration of the vine and the branches reminds us how essential it is to stay connected to Jesus Christ. Our writing fruit is directly tied to our spiritual root. When we spend regular time with Him through prayer, worship, and Bible study, our writing reflects His presence. When we don’t, our words may still flow, but they lack the power that comes from abiding.
As a Christian writer, how is your time with the Lord? Has it been steady—or has it been hit or miss lately? Have you been so busy serving God that you haven’t spent much time alone with God?
It’s true—God misses His time with you. If you writing has felt strained or your creativity has dulled, take a moment to return to the vine and reconnect. You’ll notice the difference not only in your spirit, but in the fruit your writing produces.

Reflect & Respond
- What has been competing with your time with God lately?
- What small step can you take this week to reconnect?
Pause & Pray
Father, help me stay connected to You so I can produce much fruit as Your writer. Amen.
