Red Tide

On 10/18/24, the FWC reported that the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was detected in 5 samples from Southwest Florida over the past week. K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in Pinellas County and background to very low concentrations in Manatee County.

The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) received 4 birds with toxicosis symptoms (from red tide or blue-green algae) from 10/15/24 - 10/21/24.

Blue-Green Algae

On 10/14/24, sampling for cyanobacteria by the Lee County Environmental Lab reported no visible cyanobacteria across all sites.

On 10/23/24, satellite imagery of Lake Okeechobee showed an algal bloom but cloud cover and wind prevented an area from being determined. The previous area of the bloom, measured on 10/16 was 30 square miles, or 6% of the lake.
