Dear Friends,

Welcome to the second edition of The PR Maven® Monthly — your trusted guide for building a standout personal brand, gaining recognition through thought leadership, and mastering the evolving worlds of public relations and professional networking.

Whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur, emerging executive, or ambitious professional, this newsletter is designed to help you increase your visibility, credibility and ultimately, your influence.

Let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room: The landscape of PR and branding is changing — fast. Search engines — once straightforward tools for discovery — are now intelligent, AI-powered curators of content. This shift is altering how media coverage is found, consumed, and ranked. It means your digital footprint — from interviews and bylines to podcast appearances — needs to be optimized not just for people, but also for algorithms. Knowing your target audience and serving them content that helps solve their greatest problems is the key to the "new" kind of search engine optimization.

Speaking of strategy, AI is opening up new doors for how we present ourselves online, especially on platforms like LinkedIn. Smart tools can now assist you in crafting compelling posts, tailoring your profile for better visibility, and identifying high-value connections. But here’s the key: AI is only as effective as the human touch behind it. Your authenticity and voice still matter most. I’ll be sharing tips each month on how to use AI without losing that essential human element.

Relationships, after all, are at the heart of public relations. I’ve always believed in the magic that happens when online connections become in-person relationships — and vice versa. If you meet someone at a conference, follow up with a LinkedIn connection or a warm email. If you meet someone fascinating online, take the initiative to grab coffee or hop on a Zoom call. That bridge between virtual and real-world connection is where trust is built and opportunities are born.

And let’s talk about something we don’t always discuss in the world of professional branding: Appearance. Yes, we’re in a post-pandemic era where business-casual has become even more casual, and the summer sun may tempt you to dress down…people in jorts (jean shorts) or even T-shirts. But remember, first impressions still count. Whether you’re attending a networking breakfast or a speaking engagement, dressing professionally shows respect — for yourself and the people you meet. “Dress for success” may be an old adage, but it’s never gone out of style.

In the coming months, this newsletter will explore topics like pitching to the media, finding and securing speaking gigs, building your personal narrative, and using the latest tools to amplify your impact. Consider this your backstage pass to the world of strategic personal branding.

I’m excited to take this journey with you. Let’s grow, connect, and shine — online and off.

With warm regards,

Nancy Marshall

Helping You Become Unforgettable

Many of you know that I love to cook, and so do the members of my team. I recently took a sushi-making class with Chef Alex Herzog of Great Wave Sushi. He is so charismatic, talented, and great at teaching how to make delicious sushi rolls and hand rolls. If you are ever in Portland, Maine, check out his Great Wave Sushi truck. For truck locations and cooking class schedules, check out www.greatwavesushi.com.

Memorial Day weekend was a bit chilly here in Maine, but my son Craig and I made the most of it with a boat ride wearing ski hats and ski jackets! As you can tell, I was having a great time! He was happy to get back inside by the fire! Either way, here's to warm temperatures and sunny days with family and friends this summer!

Tip of the Month

To become unforgettable, consistently share your unique perspective with generosity and authenticity. Whether you’re on stage, in a boardroom, or writing a post, speak from experience, not ego — and always aim to serve your audience. People remember those who educate, inspire, genuinely connect, and smile.

Testimonials

“Last week, Nancy spoke once again at Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce’s Business Breakfast. Back by popular demand. (I think that this is the 5th one that she’s done for us!) At one point, she had us almost rolling on the floor laughing. If you’ve been to as many speaker presentations as I have, you know how great it is to have someone who can inject a bit of levity into their material. She did that AND provided substantive content that our business professionals could walk away with and implement at their company or nonprofit. I highly encourage anyone who’s thinking about engaging her for a speaking event to take the leap. It’ll be worth it, I promise.”
