Organisation

Scratchworks Theatre Company

What are you looking for?

Set & Costume Designer

Who are you looking for?

Scratchworks Theatre Company are looking for an experienced set & costume designer, ideally based in the South West to create visually striking and practical set & costume for our new family show, The Mushroom Show (working title).

Role start date: Monday 12th August 2024

For more info & about the company visit: https://www.scratchworkstheatre.com/opportunities

What is the fee?

£3134

Tell us about the job

The Mushroom Show will be an outdoor production, which will be versatile enough to also be performed indoors in a variety of spaces (village halls, schools, theatre spaces, churches, parks etc). The production is also a one-hander, but will have 3 different performers available to tour (2 performers based in the South-West and 1 in the South-East) so 2 versions of the set will also be required eventually.. We are also planning to use speakers & radio mics for the production.

Scratchworks will be starting their R&D process in August, which includes co-creation sharings & workshops which will feed into the final production. It will be essential to have the designer available to design prototypes that we can test at the sharings/workshops so as to problem solve and adapt as we go.

The set & costume designer will be responsible for the design of the set, costume & any additional props. The designer will work closely with the core creative team during their R&D in August/September. During this time, set & costume prototypes will be created and tested in front of a scratch sharing audience. By the end of the process, we want to have developed a full concept for the set & costume that could be handed over to a maker.

The materials budget will be there to cover costs for prototypes, as well as the materials to make a minimum of one set & 3 sets of costume (for each performer on rotation)

As this is a small scale touring production, ideally the set & costume will be able to be dismantled to fit into a car.

Dates & Requirements:

We have laid out the dates of our R&D below. The designer will be required to be available and attend in person rehearsals from the week of the 12th August

R&D weeks:

5th - 9th August

12th - 16th August (designer required in person)

28th - 30th August (ideally designer available)

18th & 19th August (ideally designer available)

Co-creation sharings/workshops: 27th August, 20th Sept, 21st Sept & 22nd Sept

Essential

- Experience designing for outdoor productions

- Experience in working on small-scale touring productions & family shows

Ideal:

- Based in the South West (or has a base in Devon for the R&D period)

- Has previous experience working with reclaimed/recycled materials

- Has experience creating eye catching & visually striking costumes & set
