The Magic of Turning Stuffing into Expression, Paper into Treasures.

Tiny stitches. Hidden pockets. Big imagination

Howdie!

Happy Thursday!

Two projects leaned in close this week—quiet, persistent, impossible to ignore.

One asked for expression.

The other wanted places to hold secrets and stories.

A butterfly fairy’s head begins as a misshaped ball with facial features painted onto it.

Then, a long, fine needle, strong nylon thread, slow and deliberate stiches use the unseen ingredient, tension. It travels from the back of the head to the front. Tiny stitches go from side to side.

Magically a nose begins to appear.

A mouth begins to smile.

This process is called needle sculpting—a technique widely used in doll-making to shape features by redistributing internal stuffing through scooping with the needle, held in place by tensioned that applies controlled compression. It transforms flat forms into expressive faces with depth and personality.

Each pass of the needle refines the story.

What began as a misshaped ball with a flat surface becomes a soul.

The second project unfolded in layers—paper, folds, pockets. It was to be an envelope book to be included in the upcoming exhibition at the Sedona Library (April 11th-17th)

I’ve made envelope books before, but this version would hold signatures (sheets of paper, folded in half, stitched together to create pages in a section), adding rhythm, space for stories, and to places to hide surprises.

I love envelope books because they hold both objects and emotions. Every pocket becomes a place for a little treasure; a photo, a letter, a gift, even cash. They’re playful, practical, and full of possibilities. One went to a dear neighbor’s daughter as a wedding gift. Each pocket held a $20 bill. Another is waiting for our nephew’s graduation this June.

These books are experiences one can hold.

Now it is ready to join other one-of-a-kind books created by a community of passionate book artists at the upcoming Sedona Community Library exhibit, April 11th-17th.

This is the joy of mixed media art: ordinary materials transformed into something personal, useful, and a little magical. A needle pulling thread. A fold holding space.

Both ordinary. Both become something more.

If something sparked your curiosity. The sculpting. The stitching. The storytelling. Just let me know. I am always happy to share. Curious minds are always welcome. Creative spirits encouraged.

By for now,

Nora
