February 2022
Greetings!
This week, we remember the great Paul Farmer. Dr. Farmer was a pioneer of global and public health who inspired so many of us to question inequities in health and healthcare systems, to challenge structural violence, to learn from the richness and resourcefulness that exists within every community, and to look to humility and effective communication as much as technology and innovation as we seek to address the world's most pressing health challenges. We are deeply saddened by his early passing and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
"The essence of global health equity is the idea that something so precious as health might be viewed as a right." -Dr. Paul Farmer

CFHI Scholarship Recipient Spotlight
|
|
We are excited to spotlight Driss Davy Duhiteka who participated in the Global Health Comparative: Virtual Internship with a focus on Ghana! Driss is a Clinical Medicine graduate from Burundi with a Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery degree from the School of Medicine of Zhejiang University.
He shares, "I am grateful to have been awarded the Thomas Hall Scholars Program scholarship and hope to see more aspiring global health professionals enroll in the different programs CFHI has to offer! As a young, aspiring, African intern and a national of a Low Resource Country, I highly recommend the program to college graduates and entry-level professionals as an opportunity to gain ground on the ins and outs of how international NGOs promote health for all and intervene holistically in sometimes-familiar settings as the ones I come from while gaining cultural exposure and learning to work with like-minded global health professionals."

CFHI Global Team Spotlight
|
|
This month, we are spotlighting the work of Dr. Joel Buenaventura, MD, MPH.
Dr. Joel is CFHI's Medical Director in the Philippines and works at the Department of Health as Chief of the International Relations and Diplomacy Division. He mentors graduate students who have a strong interest in global health policy in CFHI's virtual practicums. Dr. Joel's wealth of knowledge and experience make virtual practicums a valuable opportunity for students to bridge theory and practice through tailored, relevant, and appropriately scoped projects. Past participants have worked in evidence-informed policies on several global health themes, including vaccine multilateralism, surveillance systems for COVID-19, and disaster response in the Philippines context.

CFHI Virtual Program Spotlight

CFHI and St. Catherine University: A Custom Virtual Program in Oaxaca
Co-designed by the faculty of St. Catherine University and CFHI, we recently offered 62 students from the School of Nursing a 4-day intensive virtual global health experience. Students engaged in virtual clinical tours and seminars about pressing health challenges, indigenous healing practices, the healthcare system, and the nursing profession in Mexico. They also participated in cultural activities to further their knowledge about local realities, had Spanish lessons, and met with Oaxacan host families.
By incorporating different stakeholders and learning formats, these students had the unique opportunity to explore global and public health issues through the lens of Oaxacan health leaders and experts. This is the second year the program has run, and we are excited to keep working to provide these immersive, virtual experiences in collaboration with our academic partners.
