TRANSFORMING HEARTS AND COMMUNITY THROUGH JESUS' LOVE.
| | | | | | |
VIDEO MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR
In this week's video, Fr. Andrew invites us to another full Sunday at St. Gregory's! This Sunday, the church recognizes "Stand Up Sunday," a nationwide day of solidarity when we come together to celebrate interfaith relationships and stand up against all forms of religious bigotry. After Sunday's 10 AM service, join us for a Town Hall Gathering in Harris Hall, led by Wazim "Zim" Reid, Senior Warden of St. Gregory's Vestry.
Looking ahead, please join us on Sunday, November 1 for All Saints' Day. If you'd like to submit names of loved ones who have gone before us, please email the names to the church office and let them know if you would prefer they be read at the 8 am or the 10 am service on November 1st. The church office email is office@st-gregorys.com.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
STAND UP SUNDAY
| |
In coordination with the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate, and a national coalition of faith leaders and congregations from many faith traditions, St. Gregory's is observing Stand-Up Sunday. Together, we seek to promote mutual respect, protect sacred worship spaces, bear witness against religious hatred and bigotry, and affirm the dignity and worth of every human being as a child of God.
In community gatherings, I often find myself speaking about the unique gift of living in Boca Raton and engaging in interfaith conversation and cooperation. Our community is blessed with a vibrant Jewish population that includes many thriving congregations whose leaders exercise influence and leadership far beyond our city. Our Muslim community continues to grow, and the Islamic Center of Boca Raton is actively engaged in civic and community leadership, regularly welcoming the wider community into its life and ministry. The Christian community is likewise home to strong congregations representing many denominations and theological traditions.
Boca Raton is, in many ways, a living laboratory for building mutual respect, understanding, and friendship among the children of God. I am also mindful of St. Gregory's own history. We worship on land that was given to us as a gift by a Jewish family seventy-four years ago. That remarkable act of generosity remains a powerful reminder of the bonds that unite us.
Stand-Up Sunday offers us an opportunity to recall the promises of our Baptismal Covenant, in which we commit ourselves to seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving our neighbors as ourselves, and to respect the dignity of every human being.
In God's name, there is no place for religious hatred or bigotry. This is true whether it takes the form of antisemitism, Islamophobia, anti-Christian persecution, or violence directed against people of any faith tradition. Today, we join with people of many faiths in proclaiming that the Holy One, the Creator of us all, calls us not to hatred, fear, or division, but to love, understanding, and peace.
If it can happen in Boca, it can happen anywhere.
Blessings and peace,
Andrew+

Seraphic Fire Opens 24th Season with New Artistic Director James K. Bass
On Sunday, October 18, 4:00 pm at St. Gregory’s Episcopal, Seraphic Fire opens its 24th season with Serenade to Music, James K. Bass’ first program as Artistic Director. Spanning more than three centuries of choral music, the concert features four works never before performed for Seraphic Fire’s home audiences. Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music pairs piano, solo violin, and chorus in a radiant tapestry of Romantic lyricism. Eric Whitacre’s When David Heard offers an unaccompanied tour de force of vocal color and profound emotional depth. Buxtehude’s Baroque meditation Ad Manus is reimagined through Caroline Shaw’s contemporary response, To the Hands, weaving strings and voices into a striking dialogue across time. Together, these works explore beauty, grief, devotion, and the transcendent power of the human voice.
“When I conceived this program, I thought of calling it ‘Premieres’ because every work will be performed by Seraphic Fire for the first time,” said Bass. “It is also my first concert as Artistic Director. I wanted a program that demonstrates the extraordinary range of this ensemble, from Baroque and Romantic music to works of the 20th and 21st centuries.”
The pre-concert conversation will be presented one hour before the concert. Tickets are on sale now at SeraphicFire.org and by phone at 305.285.9060.

A MESSAGE FROM TIM
This Sunday we will observe Stand Up Sunday as we unite with our ecumenical neighbors and stand up to religious hatred. Our music at the 10 AM service, reflecting our scripture readings and the theme of anti-hate, will include the great hymn Judge Eternal, Throned in Splendor with a beautiful and majestic setting by Gerre Hancock (1934-2012). Written by British author Henry Scott Holland (1847-1918) in 1910 as a national hymn while he was a Canon of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, this hymn first appeared in the English Hymnal in 1906 and weaves the texts of Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews with Christ’s desire to bring love and peace, unity and understanding…with thy living fire of judgment purge this land of bitter things; Solace all its wide dominion with the healing of thy wings. Still, still the weary folk are pining for the hour that brings release, and the city’s crowded clangor cries aloud, for sin to cease: And the homesteads and the woodlands plead in silence for their peace…Crown, O God, thine own endeavor: Cleave our darkness with thy sword… American composer/organist Gerre Hancock served as Organist and Master of the Choristers at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Fifth Ave. in New York City and his wife, Judith, served as Associate Organist there for many years.
The Communion Anthem, Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether, was composed by hymnist Percy Dearmer in 1931. Dearmer (1867-1936) was born in London and was educated at Westminster School and at Christ Church, Oxford and ordained in 1891, becoming Vicar of St. Mary the Virgin, Primrose Hill, London. He was one of the compilers of the English Hymnal in 1906 and was one of its major contributors. This beautiful hymn was set to music by Harold Friedell (1905-1958) who was an influential American Organist and teacher of music, having taught The Juilliard School and Union Seminary in New York City. Friedell composed several choral anthems and solo organ pieces and was a prominent liturgical and musical leader within the Episcopal Church and the wider Church of England. He was appointed Organist at New York’s famed St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in 1946 where he oversaw an extensive music program which benefits from his influence even today.
As we continue our SPOTLIGHT ON THE CHOIR, we say hello to Lori Snow, Anja Yargici, and Lovell Rose! It is a joy to work with these and all members of our choir every week!
Blessings to all,
Tim

SPOTLIGHT ON
THE CHOIR OF ST. GREGORY’S
We continue our spotlight on members of the choir this week as we highlight one of our volunteer members, Lori Snow, who is also a Schola Cantorum member, and two of our professional members who help make up our Schola Cantorum: Anja Yargici, and Lovell Rose.
| | |
LORI SNOW
Lori Snow is a lifelong member of St. Gregory’s and has sung in the choir for 22 years.
She also occasionally plays the flute at the 8:00 service and during Christmas Eve and Holy Week services.
Lori began playing the flute in fourth grade as a member of the Deerfield Beach Elementary School band. In eighth grade, she learned to play the piccolo so she could participate in the Deerfield Beach High School marching band and, later, the University of Florida athletic bands, neither of which allowed flutes. At UF, she performed in the marching band, basketball pep band, and symphonic band while earning a bachelor’s degree in advertising.
Lori is a vice president of operations at FMSBonds, a municipal bond brokerage firm in Boca Raton, where she has worked for 27 years. She lives in Deerfield Beach and is fortunate to have her immediate family nearby. Her mother Linda also lives in Deerfield Beach, and her older brother Rob lives in Coconut Creek with his wife Stacy and their 9-year-old son Matthew. In her free time, she sings with the Master Chorale of South Florida, travels, enjoys musical theater and ballet performances, and cheers on the Panthers at hockey games.
Asked what she enjoys about singing in the choir, Lori said, “I sometimes struggle to find the right words to express myself. For me, music is a form of prayer, and nothing compares to making a joyful noise with others who share my love of music.”

ANJA YARGICI
Born in Basel, Switzerland, this accomplished musician and opera singer began her musical journey with the cello before pursuing higher education in voice and opera performance at prestigious music academies in Switzerland and Turkey. After marrying in 2017, she relocated to the United States in 2018 to continue her artistic and professional career. Anja has served as a Soprano Section Leader and choir soloist here at St. Gregory’s for nearly seven years and has been a featured performer in the South Florida area while also teaching cello and piano to young students. She combines a rich stage presence and versatile vocal performance with strong pedagogical experience.
When asked about why she enjoys singing at St. Gregory’s, Anja said, “My favorite part is working with Tim Brumfield and experiencing the peaceful environment at St. Gregory’s. I enjoy sharing the same passion for music with the other members of the choir, being one in heart, mind, and breath as we sing together. I love the freedom I feel when I step inside the church.”
| | |
LOVELL ROSE
Born and raised in Southern Maryland, Lovell has been working as a freelance musician and performer in South Florida for nearly a decade. A versatile performer, he has worked with a wide range of organizations across various disciplines. Notable favorites include Seraphic Fire, Florida Grand Opera, South Florida Symphony, Actor’s Playhouse, Slowburn Theatre, and providing the English dub for several Telenovellas. Lovell has been fortunate enough to call St. Gregory’s his Sunday home since summer 2025, heartily enjoying the first-rate musicality, hospitality, welcoming kindness, and the undisputed Best Breakfast in Boca!

SCAM ALERT:
SPOOFING AND PHISHING ARE ON THE RISE
We have recently been made aware of scammers spoofing St. Gregory’s personal and church office email addresses. If you ever receive an email or text that seems unusual, urgent, or requests personal or financial information, please do not respond or click on any links and alert the church office at your earliest convenience. Unfortunately, these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
When in doubt, pause and double-check the authenticity of the sender and contact the church office at office@st-gregorys.com. We are always here for you.
Additionally, The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles warns of widespread “DMV” text scams—please remember they will never contact you by text demanding payment or threatening suspension. Learn more from the FLHSMV Scam Alert page
The Federal Bureau of Investigation advises that phishing and “smishing” (text-based scams) often try to create urgency to trick you into clicking malicious links or sharing sensitive information. The safest approach is simple: stay alert, don’t click, don’t reply, and verify through official sources. Learn more at: Spoofing and Phishing — FBI

RESERVING ALTAR FLOWERS
TO HONOR A LOVED ONE
OR SPECIAL OCCASION
| |
Each Sunday, as we walk into the church, we are greeted by the beauty of our surroundings. In addition to our newly remodeled space, we now have stunning frontals for each church season, enhancing our worship environment. The flowers at the altar further enrich our worship experience. Sponsoring altar flowers on any given Sunday is a meaningful way to honor a loved one on their birthday, celebrate an anniversary, or pay tribute to someone special. The cost to sponsor flowers is $300. Your generous donation helps offset the cost of the flowers, and when multiple families sponsor together, the cost may be shared. The flowers serve as a beautiful and lasting expression of love and remembrance.
To learn more or to get the process started, please email the church office at office@st-gregorys.com.

Confirmation Class meets every Sunday at 9:10 am
during the school year in the Conference Room (unless otherwise noted).

All young people in grades 6, 7, and 8 can participate in and benefit from this class, regardless of whether or not they choose to be confirmed. Older teens, those transferring from other churches, or any others who are interested are most welcome to participate as well.
During Confirmation, we explore:
-- The Bible and the stories that shape our life and faith
-- A life of prayer and worship led by and replenished by the Holy Spirit

SCENES FROM THE UPPER ROOM...
On Sunday, Oct 11 we gathered in Harris Hall to enjoy Brothers Breakfast and continue our discussion about recovery with Gena Vallee.
We began as always with our meditation/prayer time, reminding ourselves that we can always take a moment to center ourselves in God before moving on to our next tasks.
We then moved into a conversation about recovery: what it means to be in recovery, and assumptions and misconceptions about addiction using some true/false statements to facilitate conversation. Gena shared her story and facilitated our conversation. We ended with prayer before heading to the 10am service.
A sample of the true/false statements that we explored:
Only poor, uneducated people are addicts.
Addicts can’t hide — it’s always obvious that they are using.
You’re only an addict if you use illegal drugs like cocaine or heroin.
You can tell who is an addict just by looking at them.
Being an addict is always your choice.
The only thing you need to quit is your own willpower.
Real Christians can’t be addicts.
Jesus would say to an addict, “Go kick your habit first. If you stay clean,
you can be one of my followers.”

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteers are needed for various ministries.
| |
Our Eucharistic Visitor volunteer group is looking for members of our St. Gregory’s family to join them as they:
1. Deliver communion and enrich the religious experience of those unable to attend church due to illness or incapacity.
2. Visit and spiritually support those in need of the comfort and companionship of St. Gregory’s
3. Maintain contact with those parishioners with whom they are assigned to assure them that they are still a part of our St. Gregory’s community.
If this type of ministry appeals to you, please click to view volunteer opportunities or contact the church office at office@st-gregorys.com or Gena Vallee at 561-451-7747 or email her at gvallee@st-gregorys.com for more information.
