Fundraising update: Fall begins a new fiscal year

KGOU tote bag Tshirt and travel tumbler

The fall fundraising season kicks off at KGOU on a hopeful note—hoping for a better year! We ended the previous fiscal year June 30 with fewer supporters, although the amount given overall remained flat. Other public radio stations are seeing similar declines, but if the trend continues, we won't be able to sustain our public service journalism and entertainment programs for the long term.

Listener support is the single largest source of funding for KGOU, so if you've been thinking of making a contribution, now is the time! Without strong support, KGOU could not bring you the excellent news coverage and entertainment options you rely on. Start or renew your contribution to keep KGOU financially strong:

KGOU begins participation in NPR+ podcast bundle

KGOU is now participating in a new podcast perk from NPR. It's a bundle of great NPR podcasts delivered sponsor-free, plus bonus episodes from select shows like Fresh Air, Planet Money, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! and the Car Talk archives. This is an early phase of NPR+ and right now it's available only with a separate donation, but soon we hope to be able to offer it to all current KGOU supporters. Stay tuned!

Zorba's co-host Tom Clark retires

After more than 30 years as co-host of Zorba Paster On Your Health, Tom Clark is retiring. Zorba paid tribute to his friend (and sometimes foil) on a recent episode, thanking him for his 40 years in public radio. The show's producer, Karl Christenson will be joining Zorba as co-host, bringing us advice for healthy living and recipes Thursdays at 11 a.m. on KGOU. Send Tom your best wishes and see photos in this tribute:

KGOU Readers Club: Clara Luper's 'Behold the Walls'

On August 19, 1958, Clara Luper and thirteen young Black people walked into Katz Drug Store in Oklahoma City, sat down at the lunch counter, and were denied service. This first organized sit-in in Oklahoma sparked similar demonstrations in other states, and ultimately helped to end legal racial segregation. Luper's 1979 firsthand account, Behold the Walls, has been re-edited and re-released in a commemorative edition by the OU Press. Join KGOU's Logan Layden for the next Readers Club discussion Monday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.

How Curious: New season features Oklahoma 'critters'

KGOU's podcast about Oklahoma legends, oddities and history, How Curious, begins a new season this month. Host and producer Rachel Hopkin says there's something of an animal theme emerging in this next batch of episodes. We'll be hearing about Shetland ponies in Midwest City, chickens in Tulsa, and—supposedly—an octopus in Oklahoma lakes. You'll learn all about this legendary monster in the first episode, Tuesday, Sept. 26. If you have a question for Rachel to investigate, email curious@kgou.org.
