The MSU EDA University Center for Regional Economic Innovation (REI) is excited to announce a newly awarded Student-Led, Faculty-Guided (SLFG) Project: Enhancing Economic Growth through Air Quality Data Analysis and UX Design in Low-Economic Regions of Michigan.
This project will connect Michigan State University undergraduate students with JustAir, a Michigan-based startup focused on air quality analysis, to help develop data tools that support community understanding and action around environmental health. The focus will be on Wayne County where students will analyze air quality data—such as PM2.5, PM10, ozone, and NO₂—alongside meteorological data, and external sources such as traffic and wind patterns to build analytical frameworks and visualization tools. In addition, an MSU User Experience (UX) student will design community-friendly user interfaces, making the tools more accessible for stakeholders.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) and with additional support from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), SLFG projects provide students with meaningful, real-world learning experiences while delivering technical assistance to Michigan communities.
This project will be led by Dr. Dirk Colbry, Senior specialist-curriculum development, Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE), whose leadership helps guide students in applying their classroom knowledge to community-driven innovation.
