ACVA CEO’s Letter -   MORE GOOD NEWS!

Dear Students, Faculty, Alumni, and friends,

Many of our students who have availed of our Dr. William Levacy Memorial Scholarship offer, are now almost done with their 10 course programs and are preparing to work on the Certification exams and related titles - what an accomplishment! Using the ACVA building block method of study, they have learned to synthesize attributes, which is so essential to reading horoscopes.

In honor of them and others on their way, we at ACVA are happy to extend this special half-price Scholarship offer for some time more! Celebrate the spirit of Aavani Avittam (Full moon in Nakshatra, Dhanista) on Aug 22, 2021. The day after is Upakarma (beginning), which signifies the start of the study of the Vedas including Jyotish, which is a limb of the Vedas!

Remember, ACVA welcomes donations of your talent, energies, writings and time in any form! Come evaluate our offerings on our website, and contact our Registrar if you have questions.

Today, we highlight our ACVA STORE. For those who love Vedic Astrology, and love to read or listen to lectures (no classes!), we extend to all readers, the facility to access and purchase from our ACVA store:

• Dr. William Levacy’s online pdf of ‘Beneath a Vedic Sky’. Peggy Levacy, widow of Dr. Levacy, has generously allowed the ACVA Store to present this amazing tome at a very reasonable cost to you, which is currently not easily available anywhere.
• A Level 1 Jyotisha RatnaTM package of MP3s, with approximately 40 MP3s of highly regarded astrologers, who are well-wishers of ACVA. These recordings were made during the various ACVA Conferences held over the past few decades.
• If you wish to test the waters of Jyotisha, you may purchase individual MP3s from the extensive list in our Store.
• Our Certification examinations are available to all astrologers, who are ready to be certified by a world-class institution, the American College of Vedic Astrology! Exams are conducted by our distinguished Instructor, Gary Gomes, who has been recognized and certified by the Bharata Vidya Bhavan as an expert in Hindu Astrology. You may wish to purchase a guide book to the exam, to decide for yourself if you are ready.

We would love to hear your thoughts on what you are looking for, from ACVA. Our goal is to provide you with what you want and need from ACVA.

All good news and more to come, onward and upward!

The Background of Jyotisha / Historical Theory

There is an enormous difference of opinion regarding the antiquity of

Jyotish. According to some Hindu spiritual traditions, the Surya Siddhanta; a classical reference on Vedic Astronomy, dates back to 1,000,000 BCE, and is an Atlantean text.

At the other end of the spectrum, in accordance with theories perpetrated by Dr. David Pingree and other Western scholars and astrologers, Jyotish formed in Indian as the result of the introduction of Greek astrology into Indian, either through trade, the invasion of Alexander, or through some sort of Persian influence. More moderate positions either date Vedic astrology back to the time of the Vedas (estimated now at 1,500 BCE) or credit it as being an outgrowth of ancient Babylonian or Chaldean systems. Although I have not this concept postulated in any text, Chinese astrology could be argued as an influence, because of its use of 28 Lunar Mansions. (The sky in China does not lend itself to the use of horizons as rising points, so the Chinese zodiac developed a rather different orientation than other astrological systems.). Interestingly enough, both Chinese and Indian astrology seems to be built on multiples of 12 years (roughly equivalent to cycles of Jupiter).
