🐢Making Waves: A Big Loggerhead’s Big Rescue 🌊

JUNO BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A massive loggerhead sea turtle hit by a boat off Florida’s Atlantic coast arrived at a turtle hospital needing medical care, but at 302 pounds (137 kilograms), Pennywise was too large to fit their equipment.

So the veterinary team at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach took her to nearby Jupiter Medical Center, hoping she could get a CT scan on a human machine. She was too big for that, as well.

They quickly came up with another plan: taking Pennywise to Palm Beach Equine Clinic in Wellington, where the scan was performed on equipment designed for horses.

🌙🐢 How You Can Be a Turtle Hero in the Florida Keys 🐢🌙

Are you heading to the beaches of the Florida Keys? You might just have the chance to become a sea turtle hero — no cape required!

Each year, endangered sea turtles return to our shores to lay their eggs under the cover of night. Our dedicated Save-A-Turtle volunteers patrol the beaches at sunrise to find, mark and protect nests. But with miles of coastline and only so many eyes on the sand, it's possible to miss something — and that’s where you come in.

If you spot a nesting sea turtle or fresh turtle tracks, let us know!

📩 Just email us at: nesting@save-a-turtle.org

Before you report, remember these turtle-friendly tips:

🐢 Stay at least 50 feet away from any sea turtle

🌑 Avoid lights and keep voices low — bright lights and loud sounds can scare turtles away

🚫 Never touch or disturb turtles, nests, or hatchlings — they’re protected by law

By staying alert and respectful, you help ensure these ancient creatures can nest safely — and that thousands of tiny hatchlings have a chance to reach the sea.

Let’s keep the beaches clean, dark, and flat — and give sea turtles the peaceful nesting season they deserve.

Together, we can make waves for sea turtle conservation. 💚🌊

🚤 Be a Hero on the Water — Help Prevent Boat Strikes! 🐬🐢

Recent boat strike victim! Red arrow indicates start of strike wound.

Every year, far too many dolphins, manatees, and sea turtles are injured or killed by boat strikes — a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy we hear about far too often.

But here’s the good news: you can make a difference every time you hit the water.

🌊 Be a Wildlife Watcher

Designate someone on your boat as a marine animal spotter — a second pair of eyes constantly scanning for wildlife in your path. It’s a simple step that can save lives.

🕊️ Obey No-Wake and Slow-Speed Zones

These signs are there for a reason — to protect both wildlife and boaters. Slowing down gives you more time to react and helps reduce underwater noise and injury risks.

📞 See Something? Say Something.

If you encounter an injured or distressed marine animal, whether you're on a boat or walking the beach, please contact the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline immediately at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

Our waterways are shared with incredible marine life. Let’s protect them by being responsible stewards every time we set sail.

💚 Together, we can keep Florida’s waters safe for everyone who calls them home — flippers, fins, and all.
