I am interested in chemistry at the interface with biology and medicine. I have always had an interest in understanding the pathology of a disease. Through my research, I am working on a diagnostic tool that detects microRNA (miRNAs) molecular profiles to help better understand human health and predict the likelihood of human disease. Montoya’s interests in biosciences were sparked in part by “Osmosis Jones,” an animated action comedy about one white blood cell’s race against the biological clock to hunt down and destroy a lethal new virus. Click here for "her story."

In case you missed it:
March 3rd, we hosted an RNA Collaborative Seminar with Melissa Moore, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer at Moderna Therapeutics (webinar abstract). The attendance was over 1,400 participants. Michigan Science Writers, a graduate student organization at the University of Michigan whose goal is to train fellow graduate students & post-doctoral fellows in science writing and editing, kindly covered this event for us. Visit their blog.
Fun fact: By the end of 2021, Moderna will have produced 140 kgs of RNA!

Single-Molecule Investigation of Cooperativity within the Glycine Tandem Riboswitch, Rosa A.Romero, Adrien Chauvier, Nils G.Walter, Biophysical Journal, Volume 120, Issue 3, Supplement 1, 12 February 2021, Page 312a, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bpj.2020.11.1978
Abstract:
Riboswitches are genetic regulatory elements located in the 5’ untranslated region of bacterial messenger RNAs (mRNAs). Riboswitches contains two RNA domains that function in concert to regulate gene expression levels in response to changing cellular conditions. Tandem riboswitches are particularly interesting because they can have more sophisticated mechanisms for gene regulation to respond to a broader range of conditions. However, many of the mechanisms they utilize for gene regulation remain unclear.
