Mountwest Community & Technical College to Award College Credit to Woody Williams Practical Nursing Students

Mountwest Community & Technical College and Cabell County Schools announced a strategic partnership that will allow students at the Woody Williams Center for Advanced Learning and Careers to earn college credit while completing their Practical Nursing certification.

The program has been approved by the Higher Learning Commission, a step that will allow students to qualify for federal financial aid, transfer credits, and additional educational benefits. Students who successfully complete the program will graduate with a one-year certificate and will be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) for state LPN licensure.

“Partnerships like this are critical to expanding educational and workforce opportunities for students across our region,” said Dr. Josh Baker, President of Mountwest Community & Technical College. “These students are already completing the rigorous coursework and hands-on training required to earn their Practical Nursing certification, and we believe they should also receive college credit for that work. We look forward to building even more opportunities with Cabell County Schools in the future.”

“Collaborating with Mountwest to help our adult Practical Nursing students get the most out of their learning experiences is truly a win-win for everyone," said Tim Hardesty, Superintendent. "We are grateful to Dr. Baker and his team as well as the West Virginia Department of Education for making this possible for our students. We look forward to continued and expanded collaborations, which will allow us to provide hands-on, authentic learning experiences coupled with collegiate credit to more students in broader programs of study."

Enrollment is now open for the July 6 class start date. Prospective students must pass the TEAS exam by May 29th to be eligible for admission. For more information about the program and to schedule testing, click the button below or contact Tara Stevens at tara.stevens@wvesc.org.
