Superintendent's Weekly Message

Dear HBCSD Families,

As another remarkable school year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on just how fortunate we are to be part of this extraordinary little beach community. Every day, our students benefit from the unwavering support, generosity, and partnership that make Hermosa Beach such a special place to learn, grow, and thrive.

It truly takes a village to educate and support children, and our village is second to none.

We are deeply grateful for the incredible work of HVPTO, whose volunteers tirelessly create memorable experiences that enrich our students' lives and strengthen our sense of community. From the beloved Halloween Carnival and Dolphin Dash to Field Days and Senior Send-off and countless other activities throughout the year, HVPTO brings joy, connection, and school spirit to our campuses. Their dedication also extends to ensuring our teachers and staff feel appreciated and supported, a gift that has a lasting impact on our schools.

We are equally thankful for the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation (HBEF), whose relentless commitment to fundraising makes possible so many programs and opportunities that state funding simply does not provide. Through their efforts, our students benefit from elementary physical education, STEAM enrichment, music instruction, counseling support, and countless other experiences that are essential to providing a truly whole-child education. These programs help our students discover their passions, build confidence, and develop the skills they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

I also want to express my heartfelt appreciation to our exceptional staff. From our outstanding teachers and administrators to our office staff, custodians, maintenance teams, paraprofessionals, TK/instructional aides, and dependable noon supervisors who work each day to ensure our students play and learn safely, your commitment to our children is evident in everything you do. Thank you for the care, expertise, and dedication you bring to our schools each and every day.

Our gratitude extends to STAR Education for providing enriching before- and after-school programs that support our families and create meaningful opportunities for students beyond the school day. We are also thankful for our valued partnership with the Hermosa Beach Police Department, whose ongoing collaboration helps keep our schools and community safe.

As you begin a well-deserved summer break, I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank one more group of community heroes: our crossing guards. Rain or shine, they stand watch with diligence and care, ensuring that our students arrive at school safely and return home safely each day. Their dedication often happens quietly, but it is deeply appreciated.

To our 8th-grade students who will be promoting this week, congratulations on reaching this important milestone. We are incredibly proud of all you have accomplished during your time in Hermosa Beach schools. Whether you are heading to Mira Costa High School, Redondo Union High School, or another destination, we know you will continue to achieve great things. Your next school community will be fortunate to have you, and we look forward to watching your future successes unfold.

Thank you to every family, volunteer, partner, staff member, and community supporter who helps make Hermosa Beach City School District such a special place. Together, we create opportunities for our students that extend far beyond the classroom and help shape the leaders, innovators, and citizens of tomorrow.

Have a wonderful, relaxing, and well-earned summer. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the first day of school on August 19th.

Warm regards,

Dr. Susan Wildes

Dear View Families,

We made it to the last week of the school year, and I write this message with so much gratitude for the love, warm welcome, and tremendous support you have shown throughout the year. It has been a true honor to lead such an incredible school community in such a beautiful place. Every day, I am reminded how fortunate I am to do this work alongside our amazing students, staff, and families.

Thank you for trusting us with your most precious gifts. I am so proud of the growth our students have made this year, academically, socially, and emotionally. It has been a joy to watch them learn, grow, and thrive.

As we look ahead, I am excited to welcome back our newly promoted Kindergarten and 1st grade students next year. At the same time, we will miss our 1st graders so much as they move on to their next school adventure. We know they are well prepared and ready for all that lies ahead.

This week, we will wrap up the school year with our final Flag Assembly on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. We look forward to performances by Ms. Ager's, Ms. Hunter's, and Ms. Corman's classes, and we will honor our final SURF winners of the year.

Hermosa Vista School Principal News

Dear Vista Families,

We had a fantastic Field Day on Wednesday! Students gave it their all during tug-of-war and enjoyed a variety of fun inflatables and activities, including soccer and baseball. A special thank you to Juli Kanner for the tremendous amount of time, effort, and planning she dedicated to making this event such a success. We are also grateful to our parent volunteers who joined in the fun and helped create lasting memories for our students.

We also enjoyed a wonderful Spring Sing performance. Mr. Ravi did an outstanding job preparing students for their performances, and it was a joy to watch them share their talents and enthusiasm for music. Spring Sing is always a highlight of the year, and it was exciting to see how much our students have grown and developed their musical skills. Thank you, Mr. Ravi, for making music such a meaningful and enjoyable experience for our students.

As we come to the close of the school year, I want to express my sincere gratitude to the entire Vista community for the warm welcome and support I have received. Together, we have accomplished so much this year, and I am thankful for the trust you place in us each day. It is a privilege to work alongside you in supporting and guiding your children during these important years of growth and learning.

Thank you for your partnership, encouragement, and commitment to our school community. I look forward to the exciting opportunities and adventures that await us in the 2026–27 school year. While we will certainly miss our 4th grade students, we are excited for them as they begin the next chapter of their educational journey at Valley. We wish them continued success and know they will do great things.

Warmly,

Dear Valley Families,

A big thank you to our students, staff, families, and community partners for your participation, support, and enthusiasm across this past week’s events—including HVS Surf Team tryouts, the 4th to 5th Grade Valley Tour, Career Days, the Last Flag Ceremony, Staff vs. Student Softball Game, 5th Grade Lip Sync, Young at Art Show, Open House, and the 5th Grade Knott’s Berry Farm trip. I truly appreciate the effort that went into each of these experiences and the way our students showed up with energy, pride, and engagement throughout the week.

Special thank you to our wonderful school counselor, Cassy Ryley, for all of your work on career day and the events leading up to the close of our school year!

5th Grade to 6th Grade Transition Tours (9:15–9:45 AM)

Each 5th grade class will be divided into small groups and guided by 6th grade student leaders through key middle school areas, including 6th grade classrooms, lockers (and how to open them), the PE locker room, and gym. These tours are designed to help students feel confident and prepared as they transition into middle school in the fall.

3rd Grade–8th Grade Book Exchange (9:15–10:13 AM)

The 3rd/8th Grade Book Exchange will be held in the Hermosa Valley Bowl. 8th graders will present a personalized book for their assigned 3rd grader. This year, students will also share poems from their Wit & Wisdom ELA unit, compiled into a 3rd grade class poetry book. Cookies and lemonade will be provided by HVPTO. We can’t wait for you to see this amazing product!

5th to 6th Grade Math Placement Notification

Math placement for incoming 6th grade students is based on iReady and CAASPP scores. Families will receive an email tomorrow with their student’s recommended placement (Math 6 or Math 6/7). This letter will also contain a link parents can complete if they disagree with their student’s recommended math placement. This link must be submitted by Friday, June 12th at 12:25pm, so we can build family recommendations into the master schedule. If we do not hear from you, your student will be placed in the school’s recommended math course. Students are not tracked into a fixed math pathway; instead, each year of middle school they have the opportunity to move into advanced math based on their performance. HERE is the course catalog for you to reference the two different courses.

Closing Message

I’d like to send a big thank you to all of our Valley students and families for your leadership, partnership, and unwavering support of our school in all facets. From academics to athletics, student events, wellness, and everything in between, this has been an amazing school year. I am so proud of what we have accomplished together as a school community.

To my promoting 8th graders and families—thank you. For many of you, we have shared the past five years together, and it has truly been an absolute honor to watch you grow. One of the hardest parts of being an educator is knowing that our students will one day move on. Please don’t forget to come back and check in with us—we would love to hear how you’re doing and celebrate all that is ahead for you.

Happy almost summer!

Warmly,

Jessica Bledsoe
