During this busy time for those of us here at the Edley Center, and our country, we published a new white paper, continuing our series of democracy explainers. This fourth white paper, titled The President’s Economy? The Law of Tariffs and Democracy, explains the democracy implications of President Trump’s novel assertion of tariff authority, specifically with respect to democratic governance in a globalized economy. If the United States Supreme Court rejects the current round of tariffs, as seems possible based on oral arguments in the Court, the white paper will be a key source regarding the alternatives remaining open to the President and their implications for American democracy.
On election eve this month, the Edley Center sponsored a standing-room-only panel conversation among Emily Rong Zhang, David Carrillo, and Larry Norden titled Democracy Redrawn: Prop. 50 and Representation in the Age of Nationwide Redistricting.
We continue our democracy programming on November 7 with a fireside chat between faculty co-director Daniel Farber and Sharon Jacobs, titled Presidential Power under Donald Trump. The talk will examine how the balance of power has shifted between Congress and the President, and between the President and the remainder of the executive branch.
And on November 20, the Edley Center will host a fireside chat between Catherine Fisk and Catherine Lhamon, discussing Good Government Jobs: The Importance to Democracy of Protecting and Supporting a Nonpartisan Civil Service. Our website will include a link to register for this November 20 event in the coming days.
As always, please watch our homepage for notice of upcoming events, and you can view recordings of events you may have missed at our events page.
Onward!
