It is all about getting the PEOPLE and their ANIMALS out of a predicament SAFELY and preventing the repercussions from getting worse. Most communities do not have the resources and personnel to deploy to save animals in the first minutes, hours or days after a disaster – so owners and stakeholders should have their own plans to deal with disasters. Planning ahead can save you in the long run when it comes to replacing valuable resources and livestock. The only thing more difficult than planning for a disaster, is trying to explain why you didn’t plan for it! Dr. Rebecca will be reviewing insurance, legal responsibility of owners, hazards, how to be prepared, disaster planning, what to do in an emergency, how to work with your local community and law enforcement, and much more! Presentation will be followed by Q&A session.

3rd Quarter AMHA Board Meeting Report
for the Western Region
Hello all Western Region Members,

We recently returned from the third quarter Board meeting in Las Vegas, NV at South Point Hotel, Casino and Equestrian Facility.

The Board voted to move the AMHA office to Lexington, KY. Thank you to Terri Sturm and committee for the excellent research and presentation. Though it pained us to depart Vermont, financial and logical reasoning ruled out in the end. Thank you to all the members who responded with their opinions whether for or against the move. There was a very large amount of support for the move.

A global e-mail was released earlier regarding the move including explanations. It can be found on the AMHA website along with the hard copy of the report and a visual of The Kentucky Horse Park. We will be relocating to a professional office space within the United States Pony Club’s annex building with a much smaller footprint. The good news is networking has already begun. We have already been contacted about being part of the presentations next year for events happening there at the Park. We have also been contacted by other breeds wishing us well and welcoming us.

Thank you to Rollie and Terri Sturm for their hospitality at their beautiful farm in Las Vegas, NV. What a chef Rollie is! He cooked dinner for the entire Board and the food was delicious. The evening was wonderful and a lot of fun. Thanks also goes to Sheridan Sturm and Andy Marlett.

We still need contributions for the California Bucket silent auction at OKC. Right now it is not looking good. Thank you for the few that stepped up to the plate early. Please contact Mari Sanderson at morgan4show@gmail.com if you wish to contribute to this worthy cause. We need to fill the bucket with exciting items so people bid high and bid often. The proceeds go to support the National Museum of the Morgan Horse’s exhibit at Pineland Farms.

We wanted to wish everyone who is going to Oklahoma safe travels. Have great rides and drives. Most of all have fun!

Mark your calendars for January 22-25! We are combining with UPHA’s National Conference in 2020 in order to host our 2020 Annual Meeting and Awards  https://www.morganhorse.com/media-events/convention .  More details to follow!

A day after the meeting in Las Vegas was over, Carrie Mortensen, our Executive Director and Mari Sanderson traveled to Denver, CO for the second USEF affiliate retreat with all the affiliates of said organization. The meeting was very productive and we all walked away feeling very positive. There will be a press release forthcoming shortly.

Safe travels to all those traveling to OKC and good luck. See you there!

Thank you for the privilege of serving as your directors.

Submitted by Western Region Directors and AMHA President Mari Sanderson, Terri Sturm, and Carol Fletcher
3rd Quarter AMHA Board Meeting Highlights
Below you will find highlights from the AMHA Board of Directors Third Quarter Meeting, which took place September 7 2019, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Relocation Approval:   Committee Chair, Terri Sturm provided the Ad-Hoc Lease Review Committee’s proposal to move the AMHA Office to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. The presentation was broken down into 4 parts; The Challenge; The Research; The Resolution; and The Proposed Motions. The complete presentation can be viewed on the AMHA website at https://www.morganhorse.com/upload/photos/105509.09.19_Relocation_Presentation_Approved.pdf .
There is also a Kentucky Horse Park informational video available on the AMHA website at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xugnfcuQa5w .
After much review, the Board unanimously approved the relocation of the home office as proposed. This relocation endeavor is made with the single, united purpose of upholding the AMHA’s mission of preserving, promoting and perpetuating the American Morgan Horse for generations to come. AMHA also acknowledges and will continue working hard to ensure that the history and legacy of the Morgan’s New England heritage is not lost but rather celebrated by all. In continuing with the Board’s mission to maintain transparency with the membership in all endeavors, updates and additional supporting documents will be provided as available. The Board will continue to keep the membership advised of the progress of this transition. A specific page https://www.morganhorse.com/about/office-relocation/ has been added to the AMHA website to organize all relocation materials in one easy spot.

Bylaws:  Committee Chair, Carol Fletcher presented the Bylaws report. The Committee continues to work on developing a more appropriate “attendance” requirement for a possible amendment to the bylaws. It remains a work in progress and it will be reviewed and presented again at the next scheduled meeting. The Bylaws Committee is also currently reviewing the policy covering the structure and operation of AMHA Working Committees. As the Committee identifies items for possible amendments, they will present them to the Board.

Registry:  Committee Chair, C.A. Lee, III, gave the Registry report. Registry statistics continue to reflect strong activity in the breeding sheds and sale arenas. Processing of registry transactions in the home office is currently extremely efficient and members are getting quick, timely service. The Board approved the Committee’s request to move forward with the proposal to convert all the microfilmed registry records to updated pdfs that can be permanently saved on our server (and in the cloud). A motion was also approved to offer the SynchroGait test at a reduced rate of $115 if requested at the time of registration.

Finance Report:   Vice President of Finance, Kate Kirsch provided the Finance Report. Fund

NMMH Operating Account: $2,965.41
AMHA Operating Account: $202,702.86

Membership statistics through August 31, 2019 were reviewed and reported being down  approximately 125 total compared to this same time in 2018. However, it was noted that premium memberships were up significantly. Financials through July 31, 2019 were reviewed and discussed and it was noted that the 2020 budget would be formally presented for approval at the Fourth Quarter meeting in Portland scheduled for November 9, 2019.

Meetings and Conventions:   The “tentative” dates being considered for the 2020 Board of Directors meetings include, First Quarter – January 22 (in conjunction with the UPHA National Conference), Second Quarter – April 26, Third Quarter (August 8 via webinar) and Fourth Quarter – November 8. These meetings are tentative and may be subject to change after the Committee investigates further. Due to the cost savings of hosting the meetings at the Kentucky Horse Park in FREE meeting room space, all meetings for 2020 are expected to be held in Lexington.

Judges’ Schools:  Approval was granted to host two judges’ schools in 2020. One will be held in conjunction with the Gold Cup Regional Morgan Horse Show in Ohio in June and one will be held in conjunction with the Key Classic Horse Show in Washington in May.

Equitation Records:  The Board accepted the proposal from the Shows Committee to begin adding Equitation class results to the official horse show record beginning with the 2020 show season. Due to the difficulty or sometimes total inability to go back and retrieve data, this information will only be added for show results being reported starting with the 2020 competition year.

Customer Relations, Marketing & Sponsorships:  An updated charter was approved which states the mission as “To promote the Morgan Horse, protect the brand and image of the American Morgan Horse Association and enhance the association’s member experience. To oversee corporate sponsorships, affinity membership programs and additional membership benefits.” In addition, the approval was obtained to create a specific account (fund) for the sole purpose of Marketing Endeavors. The Marketing Committee also requested and received approval to fund the remainder of the 2019 Amish outreach program and fund the initial promotional materials for the grand opening of the NMMH Exhibit at Pineland Farms.

Home Office:  The home office never really has a slow time and activities abound like always. Since the last meeting, three magazine issues have gone to press, the Spring/Summer newsletter THE NETWORK was issued, staff continues to administer and process program work for My Morgan and Me, Open Competition, Champion Title Program and many others including the 2nd Annual AMHA Distance Riding Championship. Administration has been actively participating in both the UPHA’s Joint Leadership Council and the USEF’s Affiliate Meeting retreats. Be on the look out at the Grand National for the new 2020 AMHA Calendar and an amazing, but very limited and exclusive Jeanne Mellin Christmas ornament. Get yours at the AMHA Marketplace booth at the show before they sell out! (AMHA Calendars will be shipped for FREE to all Morgan Horse Magazine “subscribers” with their October 2019 issue.)

AMHECT: A report of the activities of AMHECT was provided to the Board which stated that the AMHECT Trustees had approved both the 2018 Audit and Tax Return. In addition, the AMHECT Trustees approved a grant in the amount of $16,850.75 to AMHA for use towards Marketing Endeavors. This amount represents 40% of the net proceeds from the 2019 Stallion Service Auction (where traditionally 40% is put into the World Morgan Futurity, 15% is given in support of AMHA Regional shows and 5% is given to support AMHA Show Grants). In addition, AMHECT approved the moving of the 2020 Stallion Service auction to the 2019 Morgan Grand National due to the fact AMHA is not hosting their own convention in 2020. It was reported that as of the meeting date, 43 stallions have committed to the 2020 auction (being administered at the 2019 Grand National) and that an online bidding app was being utilized to assist in the processing and timely collection of bids. This exciting event should be a fun addition to the special week in Oklahoma.

Grand National: 2019 Show Chair, Jeff Gove, provided an update to the Board on the status of the show. While numbers appear to be slightly down, great plans are underway for another amazing show. New awards are also being rolled out and should make quite an impressive splash this year.

National Museum of the Morgan Horse: The Board was provided with a progress update of the Museum’s exhibit at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine. While the majority of items for the exhibit have been finalized, the signage and final touches are currently underway. The board will be inspecting the finalized exhibit at their Fourth Quarter board meeting November 9, 2019 but the public ribbon cutting will be held on April 11, 2020 during the Maine Morgan Horse Association’s Meet a Morgan Open Barn Day! Watch for further details about this exciting event. Unfortunately, the volunteer response for the annual “state bucket” silent auction has been extremely meager. This year may have much fewer options to bid on and it may be time to give the auction a break and brainstorm a fresh and new fundraising option instead. We are still looking for volunteers to sponsor MANY available states! E-mail Gayle Singer at cscgayle@aol.com to inquire about which states are still available. Special thanks to all those who have already volunteered to assist with this fundraiser that benefits the exhibit at Pineland Farms.

USEF Rule Forums and Upcoming Town Hall Meeting at GN:  Rule forums have been conducted throughout the country this year and provide for the addition of a Ranch Horse Section within the Morgan Division of the USEF Rulebook. To date, the overall consensus is of support. Be sure to attend the Rule Forum (and Open Town Hall meeting) scheduled at the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show® on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019.

Call for Candidates for AMHA Board of Directors: Remember that nomination forms are available for those members that may be interested in running for the AMHA Board of Directors. Contact the Executive Director at the AMHA office to obtain the packet of materials via e-mail at execdir@morganhorse.com .
