December 15th COMMUNITY NEWS & UPDATES
Important Information
As we approach the holiday break, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who continued to help make Hinsdale South a wonderful place to learn and work. We continue to appreciate the many gifts, talents, and passions of our school community that we experience each week. Thank you for volunteering. Thank you for challenging us to be better. Thank you for offering ideas, listening to new thoughts, sharing our struggles, and celebrating our successes. Parents and stakeholders are critical to the work we hope to accomplish to ensure a successful future for all of our students. We are honored that you share your most prizes treasures with us.
To all of you, we say happy holidays, and we hope you enjoy a safe and joyous holiday season.

Patrick Hardy, Ph.D., D.Min.
Principal
During the December 22nd through December 30th winter break from school, we are grateful to everyone for helping to restore a routine for showing up to school while supporting students and families.

We appreciate everyone’s efforts to avoid taking extra time off during the winter break. As long as your child is healthy, please encourage showing up to class when school is in session.  Calling in to report an absence for a vacation is appreciated and lets us know that your student is safe and that you are aware of the absence. Unfortunately, it still counts towards our Chronic Absenteeism percentage. “Chronic Absence” means absences that total 10% or more of school days with and without valid cause, as defined in Section 26-2a of the School Code. Last year our Chronic Absenteeism percentage was 23%. By working together, we can lower it.

Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as to connect to their peers and teachers.

We thank:
  • Our students and their families who do their best to show up daily even when it isn’t easy.
  • Our staff who go above and beyond to make school a welcoming and safe place for all students to learn.
  • Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need.

We appreciate each one of you. May these days off be restful and healing.
If your family or your student needs support, please reach out to their dean, social worker, or counselor for help.

 Sincerely,
Dr. Robin Vannoy
Director of Deans, Hinsdale South
Protocols and Procedures for Inclement Weather
As we head into the winter months, we want to remind students, staff, families and community members about the protocols and procedures we will initiate and follow should we need to close our schools due to inclement weather.

Please visit http://bit.ly/3g8xyNK for information about how and when we will communicate weather-related updates. There are also details about the Emergency Weather Learning (E-learning) Days we will implement if we need to close our schools.

Please consider encouraging your students to bring their laptops and chargers home daily as a part of their routine in case of inclement weather.
Attendance
Have questions about attendance? Need to complete a pre-arranged absence form?

The phone number for our 24-hour attendance line is 630-468-4555. You may also report absences in the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.

You must report all absences, including late arrivals and early dismissals. Failure to report an absence within 24 hours of its occurrence will result in an unexcused absence. Any student who needs to leave school unexpectedly must be excused from the dean's office before they exit the building.
Technology Help Desk
The Hinsdale South Tech Help Desk can assist students with a variety of technology-related issues and challenges (e.g., resetting passwords, repairing Chromebooks, etc.). Students can reach the Help Desk by calling 630-655-6180 or emailing helpdesk@hinsdale86.org.

  • Share photos, videos or other attachments when submitting a tip.

Please contact the dean's office if you have questions or need more information about our

Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Scholarship Fund

DHH Woods class raised money for the DHH Scholarship fund by selling cutting boards. Thank you to Mr. Beesley, Ms. Pavone and all the DHH students and support staff in the class for their hard work.
Hinsdale South World Language Week
From Nov. 28 through Dec. 2, Hinsdale South High School’s World Language department celebrated World Language Week. In classes during the week, students explored the benefits of learning a second language, study abroad opportunities, and were surprised to learn of many celebrities who speak languages other than English. Each day during passing periods, international pop hit music played in the halls to incorporate the entire student body in the celebrations. Additionally, students were able to purchase a variety of ethnic food in the cafeteria during lunches that week. On Thursday after school, students viewed the movie Big Hero 6 in German, French, and Spanish, and on Friday, students explored college and career opportunities connected to world languages.

However, the highlight of the week was when students heard directly from a variety of guest speakers who are bilingual and whose knowledge of language has helped them in their personal and professional lives.

Speakers included:
Hinsdale South senior Aryan Patel (in Spanish 5 Honors), who volunteered over the summer in a medical program in Costa Rica
Hinsdale South Social Worker Mr. Arroyo, who studied abroad in Mexico.
Ms. Angelica Rodriguez, who is bilingual and works in a hospital setting.
Dr. Trevonne Thompson, who is bilingual and the Dean of Admissions for the UIC College of Medicine.
After hearing each speaker talk about the influence and importance of language in their lives, students were able to ask their own follow-up questions. Many students expressed that this experience truly highlighted to them how knowing another language is useful in real life.
A special thank you to our Principal Dr. Hardy who helped us to coordinate our two guest speakers from outside the building!

Throughout World Language Week, students also participated in a poster contest and passport scavenger hunt.

A special thank you to the Hinsdale South Booster Club for the WL Week Booster Grant that helped to support the week’s events and contest prizes! Below are winners:
1st place poster winner of a $50 Amazon gift card: Arianna Lam
2nd place poster winner of a $40 Amazon gift card: Veanka Francisco
3rd place poster winner of a $30 Amazon gift card: Daisy Perez
