November 27, 2024

Hi Team,

Join us on Wednesday, December 11th for our December 2024 Berkshire Green Drinks event "Protecting the Environment of the Berkshires: BEAT's Year of Progress" to talk with Berkshire Environmental Action Team staff about BEAT’s important work of this past year and explore what comes next as the new year approaches!

Be part of the discussion and hear about the ongoing air quality monitoring work our Breathe Easy Berkshires program is doing, our continued work in improving aquatic and terrestrial wildlife connectivity, progress made on our Environmental Leadership & Education Center, the continuing campaign to end fossil-fueled peaker plants, the fight to prevent the expansion of the Enbridge Algonquin pipeline through Project Maple, and some of our favorite highlights from events we organized in 2024. This Green Drinks will be an online-only event. Register here.

Tuesday, December 3rd is Giving Tuesday! We are expressing our gratitude by releasing a new illustration of the red fox on Giving Tuesday, painted by Programs Director Chelsey Simmons. This charming, hand-painted design will be available for print on t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, and sweatshirts in a variety of colors on BEAT's Bonfire page. Check back on Giving Tuesday to see the new design ready for purchase!

Donations made in addition to the price of shirts at the time of purchase support our Education and Outreach, Stewardship, and Watchdogging programs year-round. We are proud to fight pollution, push for the creation and enforcement of strong environmental laws and regulations, and uplift environmental justice in the Berkshires and beyond. Please consider supporting BEAT with a year-end gift!

I would like to make a gift to support wildlife and the environment in the Berkshires and beyond!

A Message From Breathe Easy Berkshires

Many of us experienced fear and uncertainty last week as the Butternut fire in Great Barrington grew at a tremendous speed. For those of us who live in South County and close to the affected area --including three of BEAT's staff members-- it was a surreal experience to feel some of the potential threats of climate change in our own backyards, and to not know how it might affect us. For others living more northward, there was panic and concern for our neighbors as our air quality was affected with smoke from a non-immediate cause.

The above graph charts the particulate pollution readings from our 9 stationary air quality monitors beginning Tuesday morning through Thursday morning. While measurements across Pittsfield since the start of the project have been stable and relatively low -- meaning high quality air -- there was a dramatic jump in readings on Wednesday, with the highest spike occurring at about 4pm, and the presence of smoke lasting through the evening. For a very brief period of time, this meant that the air quality at some locations in Pittsfield was in the range considered unhealthy by the EPA. Our handheld monitoring devices were also brought to Great Barrington, Sheffield, and New Marlborough to measure the extent of the smoke on Wednesday evening, and observe how weather patterns were bringing it northward.

While frightening, this was a powerful moment that exemplifies the time we live in. Climate change and its increasing effects are at our doors, and it is not a localized problem. Greenhouse gas emissions, intense storms and floodwaters, wildfires, and air and water pollution do not stay within borders. But neither do the efforts of firefighters, community groups, advocacy organizations, or environmental action teams! The resources devoted from far and wide to the fighting of the Butternut Fire serves as inspiration and a reminder that, together, we can face the breadth of environmental challenges before us head-on and with support from each other.

You can learn more about air pollution and Breathe Easy Berkshires on our website, where the hourly readings from each of our air quality monitors are displayed. All are back at safe levels!

That's it for now. Thank you for all you do to protect the environment!

BEAT Looks to Decarbonization of Last Berkshire Peaker Plant

Brittany Polito | iBerkshires

"PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Environmentalists feel community cooperation may help move the needle on the county's last peaker plant transitioning to clean energy. During Wednesday's Berkshire Green Drinks event hosted by the Berkshire Environmental Action Team, Rosemary Wessel discussed possible green outcomes for Pittsfield Generating Co. on Merrill Road. 'It might be in the interest of the city to leave behind yesterday's technology and start looking at what a clean energy future might look like,' said Wessel, No Fracked Gas in Mass program director.

'By replacing it, decarbonizing our last peaker power plant could show that Pittsfield is forward-looking, an environmentally minded place that is friendly to the natural surroundings. Environmental tourism is a big part of Pittsfield and it makes sense to get rid of this last bit of fossil fuel technology that's still hanging around'..." READ MORE

Wildlife Rehabilitation: Returning Raccoons to the Woods

Jackie Robidoux & Meghan McCarthy McPhaul | Northern Woodlands

"The calls come in day and night, from homeowners, people working in the woods, and passersby on dirt roads and busy highways. They’ve found an injured fox or an orphaned squirrel or a furry cluster of raccoon kits in the chimney, and they are wondering what to do next. 'First and foremost, if you find an animal in distress, call a wildlife rehabilitator,' said Jackie Robidoux...'" READ MORE

As Countries Reel From a Dizzying Climate Summit, All Eyes Turn to Plastic Negotiations

Kiley Price| Inside Climate News

"The sun has set on the 29th United Nations climate summit (COP29), which brought representatives from nearly 200 nations together in Azerbaijan. But frustration and disappointment at the conference’s outcomes lingers among many environmentalists and world leaders, particularly from developing countries. At the so-called 'Finance COP,' delegates agreed on a deal that commits rich countries to deliver $300 billion a year by 2035 to help developing countries finance their clean energy transitions and adapt to the outsized climate impacts they face, which my colleague Bob Berwyn wrote about on Sunday. Many small island nations met the deal with disdain. Though it’s triple what countries committed to in the past, the funding mechanism is a small fraction of the annual $1.3 trillion by 2030 that experts say is necessary to meet the needs of low-income countries at a pace required to stem climate catastrophe..." Vermont Center for EcoStudies seeking participants in community science project

"Join our pollinator experiment and get a free native plant! Do you live in VT, NH or Western MA and are you interested in plants, pollinators, gardening, nature, or just want a free native plant? Then join our newest community science project at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies!

Our scientists are wondering whether non-local plants attract the same flower-visiting insects as local plants and you can help us answer this question by participating in a new research study. Starting in Spring 2025, participants will receive a free plant, establish them in their garden, watch them until they bloom, then conduct weekly 5-minute watches per plant to record the number and type of pollinators that visit while the plants are blooming.

Interested? Please fill out this questionnaire to let us know your interest and availability to participate and visit https://vtecostudies.org/projects/common-garden-experiment to learn more about the experimental effort"

‘Capitalism incarnate’: inside the secret world of McKinsey, the firm hooked on fossil fuels

Ben Stockton & Hajar Meddah | The Guardian

"Interviews and analysis of court documents show how the world’s most prestigious consulting firm quietly helps fuel the climate crisis. Two giant, mirrored walls are set to rise out of the sands of the Arabian desert. They will run parallel for more than 100 miles from the coast of the Red Sea through arid valleys and craggy mountains. Between them, a futuristic city which has no need for cars or roads will be powered completely by renewable energy. This engineering marvel, its creators say, will usher in “a revolution in civilization”. It’s the jewel in the crown of a $500bn Saudi government project known as Neom, turning a vast scrubland into a techno-utopia and world-class tourist and sporting destination. Perhaps a harbinger for the end of oil, it will supposedly put the powerful petrostate at the forefront of the energy transition. For American consulting giant McKinsey & Company, its advising on this project appears to be making good on the firm’s green promises. But behind closed doors, it has also helped the Saudi kingdom find lucrative ways to keep its oil industry afloat..." READ MORE
