IT'S FRIDAY

Dance facts about some of the biggest dance icons that will make you think, laugh and feel inspired!

Eleanor Powell

(Born 1912-1982)

DID YOU KNOW?

FUN FACT!

Since Eleanor Powell was originally a ballet dancer, to help her stay grounded and connect more deeply with the floor while learning tap, her teachers had her wear an army belt with sandbags on each side!

The extra weight helped her “find her legs” and ultimately shaped her signature smooth, uniquely grounded and powerful tap style.

Give Me The Highlights!

Who was Eleanor Powell?

  • Eleanor Powell actually taught herself to tap dance! She started as a ballet student, but when she saw other dancers tapping at a studio, she began copying their moves - and quickly became known for her lightning-fast footwork.

  • Before she ever appeared in films, Powell was already a Broadway star by age 17. She was discovered while performing at the Ziegfeld Theatre and was soon named as one of the best dancers on the stage.

  • MGM Studios signed her in the 1930s to fill a gap - they didn’t have a female star who could truly dance like the men. Powell became MGM's top tap star!

  • Unlike many female dancers of her time, Powell was known for her athletic, grounded style. She was often compared to male dancers for her strength and precision, breaking gender expectations on screen.

  • She was once voted “the most perfect tap dancer in the world” by dance critics - and her tap shoes were even bronzed and displayed at MGM Studios.
