This Week’s Parashah Lech-Lecha |
לֶךְ־לְךָ |
Genesis 12:1–17:27 / Saturday, October 24
FROM DR. ELY LEVINE
God chooses Abram to begin a new kind of community by promising him many offspring, a land to call their own, and blessing. But throughout this portion, there is more challenge than success on these fronts. Abram is forced to move around by famine, fights wars that threaten his family, and keeps some of his neighbors at arm’s length. What does it mean to hold out hope while all the evidence is pointing in the other direction?

FROM RABBI SHAWN
A question for your Shabbat table
When facing situations that require solutions, when do we leave it to others to solve (passivity), and when do we decide to take action ourselves (agency)?

Har Zion Connections, Community-Wide Impact
Har Zion’s tradition of service extends well beyond our walls. On October 20, congregants gathered at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s Main Event, featuring Debra Messing in conversation with journalist Jonah Kaplan. Rabbi Haaz took part in the memorial service preceding the evening’s program. With fellow Har Zion members Mark Fishman and Michele S. Levin serving as Federation’s board co-chairs, we’re proud to see our congregation’s longstanding commitment to Jewish communal leadership continue.
