Boston Children's Hospital Team Donates over $1,000 in School Supplies to Angelo School

Nicole Lee is constantly seeking ways for her and her colleagues to give more to communities like the ones they serve at Boston’s Children Hospital. Lee is a nurse in the Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (PIMCU) at the hospital. At the start of this school year, Lee and her team decided to partner with the Angelo School in Brockton to collect and donate a wide variety of supplies. She knew backpacks, crayons, tissues, or wipes would be immensely helpful to our Brockton students.

At first, the PIMCU team set aside a single box that they planned on taking to the Angelo once it was filled. To their surprize, they ended up with much more than they were expecting. There were enough supplies to fill the entire conference room table and chairs in the Angelo School’s front office. "It means everything to us," Lee said. "We work with elementary age children, and we see those children come in (to the hospital) who are in and out of school because of illness."

The Angelo School Principal, John Kelly, was blown away by the table full of over $1,000 worth of donated supplies. Kelly said that the BCH team’s generosity will go a long way to helping students in need and be essential in supporting the student’s learning. "This right here will help a lot of families get the supplies they need to support their learning in the classroom," Kelly said. "Our kids here are going to benefit greatly, so I just want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

Historical Tidbit:

History of the Library

The Brockton Public Library was first established in 1867 when Brockton was still known as the town of North Bridgewater. With a collection of about 600 books purchased from prominent citizens, the town opened the library in what was called the Studley building near the corner of Main and High streets. The library changed locations a couple of times until 1893 when it moved to the basement of City Hall.

As early as 1903, the city's librarian was citing the need for a larger facility. In 1910, Brockton Mayor William H. Clifford wrote a letter to industrialist Andrew Carnegie requesting a donation for a new public library building. During his lifetime, Carnegie was responsible for the construction of 2,509 libraries in the English-speaking world. Brockton's librarian, Frank H. Whitmore, followed up the Mayor's letter with his own appeal to Carnegie, saying that:

"The library shelves, after allowance has been made for a newly constructed balcony, are crowded. All available space has been used on the shelves in the Reference Room and the library is making use of a room for storage purposes not conveniently near the main collection."

Carnegie agreed to donate $75,000 to build a new library, then increased the donation to $110,000 after the city conducted a study of library needs and found that the original amount would be insufficient. In return, the city agreed to appropriate at least $11,000 annually for the operation of the library.

The dedication of the new library took place on June 10, 1913. Designed by Nathaniel C. Smith of New Bedford, the exterior of the building was constructed with brick and limestone, and the interior finish was of white marble and quartered oak. Skylights were built into the roof to provide natural lighting for the facility. The skylights have since been blocked, and much of the marble in the building has been covered with carpeting. These elements of the building will be restored during the renovation project.

 Climate Can-Do:

Rainwater Harvesting

Looking for more ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle? Introducing rainwater harvesting; a new kind of recycling!

Harvesting rainwater is exactly what it sounds like; rain is collected from buckets, barrels, rooftops, or any other sealed surface for a multitude of purposes. These applications include watering gardens, flushing toilets, washing clothes and cars!

Basic systems for rainwater collection use barrels or buckets to collect rain from either the sky or a downspout from a rain gutter. Rainwater harvesting is rather easy to start doing! Set out a few buckets or barrels the day before a big storm.

Do not drink from a rainbarrel! The water can be boiled to kill any harmful bacteria, but rainwater can hold chemicals, pollutants, and heavy metals that it has collected from its time in our atmosphere. Unless you first boil the water and then use a filtration system that can remove chemical debris/metal sediment, it is not recommended to drink rainwater.

However, it is good for watering gardens, flushing toilets, and washing clothes and cars!

This simple activity helps our planet by both conserving clean faucet water as well as reducing runoff pollution created when rainwater runs down our streets.

Added bonus: it just might save you a few bucks on your water bill! Enjoy your week, and remember, when it starts raining, you can start saving!

Fuller Craft Museum has a new Executive Director

As of July 1, 2025, Jennifer Chrzanowski is the newly appointed Executive Director at the Fuller Craft Museum. Chrzanowski is a visionary arts professional bringing 20 years of experience to her new role.

"I am truly honored to step into the role of Executive Director at Fuller Craft Museum," said Chrzanowski. "Craft is such a powerful vehicle for storytelling, innovation, and connection. Fuller Craft has long been a champion of these ideas, and I am thrilled to help lead it into its next exciting chapter — deepening its impact, expanding its reach and celebrating the incredible creativity of makers everywhere."

During Chrzanowski’s previous position as Interim Director for the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland, she led a major multi-million-dollar campus expansion project, secured significant funding for the landmark exhibition Bugatti: Reaching for Perfection, and more than doubled exhibition funding through key partnerships, including two major grants from Art Bridges.

Before her time at the Academy Art Museum, Chrzanowski was the Founding Director of DNJ Gallery in Los Angeles, where she curated a variety of exhibitions. She also served as Operations Manager at the Augusta Museum of History, where her creative lens helped reshape programming and fundraising. One standout achievement was Southern Suds, a mission that partnered with a local brewery to revitalize an old beer recipe in the museum’s collection. This project blended storytelling, craft, and community while generating revenue.

Jennifer Chrzanowski holds a BFA in film, photography, and electronic media from the University of Illinois at Chicago and is completing a master’s degree in photography from Columbia College Chicago. Luiza De Camargo and Joyce Linehan, members of the Board of Directors at Fuller Craft Museum who co-led the search committee, stated “We are excited about the future of Fuller Craft Museum under Jenn’s leadership. Throughout the interview process, it became clear she has a deep understanding of museums and their roles in their communities, and she will bring energy, empathy, and experience to the role.”

Frugality

to live a sparing or economical lifestyle with regard to money or food.

As a single mom, I raised 4 children, attained a master's degree, involved myself in environmental and social causes and created BuzzAround, while caring for my own physical and mental health. In order to accomplish this, I developed a lifestyle of frugality, I couldn't have done half those things otherwise.

Thinking about time management? Think of it this way: positive social interactions are opportunities to network; errands are opportunities to exercise and live healthier; (taking a bike, cart or bus or train); sourcing food locally is better for your brain, health and supporting nearby farmers builds resilient infrastructure. Also, I spend less, therefore I need to make less; exercise more and eat better, so quality of life is better.

Tips for frugal living: 1) Can the item you need be purchased used? Clothing resale shops have been HUGE in my life. Or better yet, try www.freecycle.org

2) Grow food or get to know your local farmers. Your food quality is better, you are healthier, mind, body & soul. "Kids who grow kale, eat kale" ~ Ron Finlay

3) With a little creativity, items you already have can live a second life & third life.

*Plastic food bags become dog poop bags. *Old towels are cut up and become rags or donated to a local animal shelter.

*Grocery paper bags can be a kid's coloring or painting project and then become artsy gift wrapping. That's three uses!

4) Bike, walk, or take public transportation when you can. Save gas and get exercise.

5) When you do buy new: go to local small businesses. Less driving. (Sometimes I can walk or ride.) More money stays in my community. Better service. Better quality products.

A little frugality can go a long way! Have a healthy, happy, frugal week. : ) ~ Jacquie
