E-NEWS: Oct. 21, 2026

An Inclusive City is a Beautiful City

From riding the trolley and enjoying recreation programs to accessing information and gaining workplace experience, Coral Gables works year-round to help people with disabilities participate more fully in community life. October’s recognition as Disability Acceptance Month highlights this ongoing commitment to ensuring residents and visitors feel valued, respected and welcomed.

The city offers accessible trolleys and trolley stops, along with recreation programs that create opportunities for connection and exploration. Fresh A.I.R. (Accessible and Inclusive Recreation) for Families is a monthly program for neurodiverse families to explore accessibility in nature. My Squad brings adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism together for social activities.

Residents and visitors can also access Aira’s visual interpretation and American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation apps for free. These on-demand services connect people who are blind or visually impaired with visual interpreters, and Deaf and hard-of-hearing users with live ASL interpreters via video. Coral Gables is currently the only city in the world offering both apps citywide.

The city also helps students prepare for the workplace through Project VICTORY. In partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the program provides students with cognitive disabilities opportunities to gain clerical and customer service experience in city departments while building skills, confidence and independence.

Parks and Recreation - Excellence in Action

The City of Coral Gables Parks and Recreation Department recently earned reaccreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), marking its fifth successful accreditation process. The department achieved a score of 100%, demonstrating compliance with all applicable national standards for operations, programs and services.

It is one of only 219 agencies out of the 10,000 agencies in the U.S. to have achieved CAPRA accreditation since 2001.
