The Deputy Mayor's Exchange

There's lots to see and do
It's hard for me to believe that this weekend marked the 50th Unionville Festival and also my 50th year of living here. Kudos to the volunteers
who made it happen
.
I had the privilege to spend time this morning at the Markham Cenotaph with some very elderly veterans
at a lovely remembrance service
.
They bravely volunteered their lives in service of their country during WWII. June 6th marks the 75th anniversary of
D-Day
. Please take a moment to remember those that served and those that never came home.
One of my former neighbours was recently hired by
Markham Fire Service
. If you're interested in a career with Markham Fire or York Regional Police, then check below.
See you around our great City!

Frequently Asked Questions...
|
|
As an ongoing section in these email updates, I would like to provide answers to some commonly asked questions by residents.
If you have a question that you would like answered, please send me an email with your question.

Question:
What is Markham doing to minimize our carbon footprint and make Markham greener? In what ways are residents encouraged to live greener? How is the city supporting residents to a greener, better living lifestyle?
|
Answer: There are many initiatives that the City and the Region are working on towards a greener environment, here are just some of them
:
- net zero by 2050 which is a long way but at least we're started
- using LED streetlights that save millions of dollars in electricity costs and provide a very bright clean white light to make driving/walking/visibility much better
- we have solar investments on many City buildings such as Angus Glen Community Centre and the Civic Centre as 2 examples
- York Region has invested $6 million in 4 all-electric buses. If positive results are forthcoming the Region will likely move to an all-electric fleet in coming years
- we have a huge tree planting program planting hundreds of trees across Markham called "trees for tomorrow" which provides carbon capturing
- our residential blue bin diversion rate is above 80% reduce-reuse-recycle
These are just a few of our green initiatives and we are always looking for ways to do even better. More information about the City's programs can be found
here and the Region's initiatives
here.
