CRJ STUDENTS EMBRACE UNIQUE INNOVATION CHALLENGE AT MAKE48 EVENT

Andrea Spykstra led CRJ's Make48 team: (left to right) Gabi, Brigith, and Diego.

Cristo Rey Jesuit's Ignatian Innovation Program integrates the three strands of CRJ’s mission (academics, work study, and faith formation) to develop mindsets, skillsets, and design thinking in the Ignatian tradition. The program's goal is to empower students to become leaders who create value and advance justice in college, careers, and communities. Because of this program, CRJ was one of eight local high schools invited to participate in the Make48 challenge at MSOE's We Energies STEM Center. Make48 is a national competition that gives teams only 48 hours to plan, prototype and pitch a new idea while working within certain specifications.

Sophomore Gabi and seniors Brigith and Diego were selected to compete for Team Trailblazer. CRJ's Innovation Lab Specialist Andrea Spykstra served as the faculty advisor for the team (although all of the work on the project had to be done by the CRJ students). The team arrived at Make48 on a Friday afternoon, learned of their challenge, and set to work. They began by brainstorming ideas that could be completed in the next 48 hours. Gabi shared, “My favorite part has to be walking around the MSOE campus to try and brainstorm ideas. It was really fun but also quite challenging to work with two other students because we all had great ideas for a product but could only finalize one.”

After acquiring their supplies from the hardware store, the team returned to MSOE to begin building. The center buzzed with activity as expert ‘Tool Techs’ worked alongside teams to bring their ideas to life. CRJ's team used CNC machines, 3D printers and table saws to build their project. The team was assisted by mentors who helped them develop and refine their concept. "As someone who is really interested in building, it was really motivating to watch the Tool Techs work with the different tools and help us make our design into a working prototype," said Brigith.

The team not only had to create and build their prototype, they had to pitch it as well. On Saturday evening, Gabi, Brigith and Diego met with marketing experts to get assistance with video editing and pitch development. By Sunday morning, CRJ’s team worked to finalize their pitch and prototype to present to the judges. Gabi said, “The experience I had on the Make48 set was definitely interesting, and I've been able to use some feedback and tips that I received on projects that I do now at school!”

We wish we could share more about what happened, but we’re sworn to secrecy because the competition will air on PBS later this January. You are invited to attend a watch party that is being hosted at the MSOE STEM lab at that time. PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
A REFLECTION FROM ANDY STITH

The members of the feasibility study were key to the creation of Cristo Rey Jesuit 10 years ago.

Cristo Rey Jesuit would not be where we are today in our 10th year as a high school without community collaboration. Cristo Rey schools have a remarkable number of stakeholders by any measure. I have always thought this was a strength of our schools. We thrive because of so many who help us bring this transformational educational model to the Milwaukee community. We are blessed to see human goodness emerge and give life to our mission in various ways. This was particularly important in the beginning, where this entire educational endeavor in Milwaukee relied on a small but courageous group who were willing to advocate and give of their time and financial resources so the vision of this school could become reality. I was new to Milwaukee at the time so it was a true collaborative effort!

Collaboration is a fundamental component of Jesuit education. A key moment in the founding of the Society of Jesus (aka “the Jesuits”) occurred when St. Ignatius, who was credited with founding the Jesuits, enrolled in the University of Paris. Ignatius knew the University was world class and could potentially lead him to people who he could engage in this new spirituality he had in his heart and mind. At the University, Ignatius met Peter Faber and Francis Xavier who were drawn to the spirituality Ignatius expressed. They were eventually recognized as co-founders with Ignatius of the Jesuits. Along with them, I am sure there were other lesser documented, yet still meaningful early collaborators who were ambassadors of the Jesuits’ mission around the world. Ignatius had bold ideas about sharing this spirituality and he knew he would need others who were brave enough and could see the impact of his vision to accomplish this.

When I came to Milwaukee to determine if a Cristo Rey school would be needed and supported, I began to identify people who might help me in this effort. Certainly, at the time, both Bill Henk, Dean of the College of Education, and Jeff Snell, Special Advisor to the President, at Marquette University were willing to assist as they hired me for the project. Not long after I started, we began to look for others in the community we thought would believe in the vision of Cristo Rey.

Two other collaborators who joined our efforts early on included Anne Zizzo and Fr. Jim Flaherty, SJ. Fr. Jim was President of Nativity Jesuit Middle School and, given this role, was a natural fit to help us connect to the community. I can distinctly remember when Jeff Snell and I visited Anne Zizzo’s office to determine if she would be our other co-chair of the Cristo Rey feasibility study. Anne is the CEO of Zizzo Group, a very successful business she started. When I walked into Anne’s conference room and sat down before she arrived, I looked at the many honors that were on the shelf that lined the wall and said to Jeff, “I love to work with entrepreneurs!” Anne met with us, asked us really good questions in true entrepreneurial style, and in the end said “yes” to our invitation to co-chair the feasibility study. Jeff, Anne, Fr. Jim, Bill, and I were the earliest collaborators who saw the possibilities and potential of this new school model’s impact on our community.

From those early days until now, our mission is thriving because of our 460 students, our teachers and staff members, our 100+ Corporate Work Study Program partners, our board members, our alumni, community volunteers, donors, and so many others! I look back with awe on the many pivotal moments, where, if not for a collaborator in the community, we may not be where we are today, and I am grateful. The Jesuits have ministries world-wide because Ignatius taught them the value of collaboration. I’d like to think if Ignatius was around today, he’d appreciate the collaborative efforts of so many to make Cristo Rey Jesuit Milwaukee a reality now for 10 years!

2024 OPEN HOUSE WELCOMES FUTURE TRAILBLAZERS

The air was buzzing with excitement as Cristo Rey Jesuit held its eleventh annual Open House on Sunday, October 20th. More than 100 people stood in line outside the school entrance 30 minutes before the event started! In all, more than 800 people attended the Open House - a new record showing the excitement the community has for the school. Shout-out to the entire CRJ faculty and staff for making this event a welcoming experience for all.

The day allowed prospective students and their families to tour the school, speak with current CRJ students and parents as well as meet their potential future teachers. Visiting prospective students had this to say about the Open House experience:

  • Cristo Rey has been my first choice since I was in 6th grade. My sister graduated from CRJ, and I want to have the same opportunities.
  • The students and teachers at Cristo Rey Jesuit are so impressive. We love the welcoming community.
  • We are very excited to be here because we have heard from so many families that it is a very good school!
  • Our student tour guides were very kind and informative.
  • I would love to go here!
  • After visiting today, I know that CRJ is my top choice.

Thanks to Admissions Director Maria Hansen and the entire team for all the hard work that was put in to make this year’s Open House such a great experience for so many future Trailblazers. The priority deadline for Class of 2029 applications is November 4th. We are grateful for all the support CRJ receives to ensure a desirable and transforming education is possible for the students of Milwaukee.
