Season of Renewal & Hope

Greetings!

As the Easter Season ensues, there is a general feeling of renewal and hope that comes over us. Spring breaks open with signs of renewal. Flowers bloom, trees put out new foliage, birds return along their migratory paths to thrill us with their songs of joy, and animals awaken from hibernation. Along with all this, there is the reopening of shipping lanes, renewed industry and commerce, and a flourishing of visitors to the Northland.

For Chum too, there is a bustle of activity as we move into the final quarter of our fiscal year. This is a time of staff evaluations, planning, projections, and negotiations as we prepare a budget for a new year of operations starting July 1.

We look forward in anticipation to the roll out of the following:

  • Our new Strategic Plan which will guide our social safety net operations for the next two years
  • Our updated employee handbook that provides for the well-being of our valuable staff and our valued guests and tenants
  • Our new health care benefits package that will provide health access to staff and their families in the event of illness

Additionally, Chum is renewing a building that has served as Duluth’s largest homeless emergency shelter since 1988. April 2026 will see ground being broken along 2nd Street and new structures being erected to create a multi-million dollar facility that will come into service in 2027.

Come May, we look forward to the completion of the work of representatives at the State Legislature. We hope for good news of funding decisions that will ensure our programs continue to operate. We hope also for good news that projects in our community about projects such as the Regional Exchange District and UGM’s Mission Heights complex. These both will bring hope to our city because of their promise of additional housing and shelter and a better downtown experience.

So, as we welcome springtime and the Easter season, we cherish your prayers and your support as we continue to work together to provide basic necessities, foster stable lives, and organize for a just and compassionate community.

April is one of those months that reminds us why community matters. The days are getting longer, the ground is thawing, and Duluth is coming back to life — and so are the people who make this place worth caring about. That’s you!

This month we’re celebrating our volunteers, marking Earth Day with action, and looking ahead to a season full of growth — in our gardens and in our neighborhoods.

To Chum Volunteers, from the Heart.

I’ve been trying to find the right words for this, and honestly, I’m not sure they exist. What you give — your time, your energy, your presence — isn’t something that can be captured in a newsletter. But I want to try.

Last year, Chum volunteers contributed 3,000 hours of direct-service work — at the Food Shelf, Safe Bay, the Warming Center, and more — and another 3,000 hours of event service.

Six thousand hours total. Let that sink in for a moment.

According to Independent Sector, the nationally recognized value of a volunteer hour is $34.79. That means your collective contribution last year represents more than $209,000 in labor — the equivalent of about 6% of Chum’s entire workforce capacity. You are not a footnote in this organization. You are a pillar of it.

But no dollar figure comes close to capturing what you actually give. Every single one of you has chosen, again and again, to show up. On cold mornings and long afternoons. When the work was hard and unglamorous, for people you’d never met, asking nothing in return. That is not a small thing. That is everything.

Chum exists because of you. Our neighbors find warmth, food, and dignity because of you. This community is stronger, kinder, and more hopeful because of the choice you make every time you walk through our doors or roll up your sleeves.

During Volunteer Appreciation Month and always — thank you.
From the bottom of my heart.

Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign -
ends April 6th!

We are reaching the end of the Minnesota Food Share March Campaign! Every dollar or non-perishable food item that you donate makes a huge difference in the Twin Ports community. Campaigns such as these keep our shelves stocked - in 2025 alone, Chum's food shelf distributed 576,000 pounds of food, with the demand for goods steadily increasing.

Thank you doesn’t begin to cover it.

Every bag of groceries carried, every hour spent at the warming center, every conversation that made someone feel less alone — that’s you. Volunteer Appreciation Week is our chance to say clearly and loudly: Chum does not exist without you. You show up when it’s cold, when it’s hard, when no one is watching. You choose generosity over convenience, time and again. We are in awe of you. This week, take a bow — you’ve earned it.

Look for ways to engage with other volunteers across the Twin Ports by attending events

put on by our friends at the United Way!

How the New Legislation Impacts Your Taxes
This Year and Beyond

New legislation, signed into law on July 4, 2025, introduced sweeping changes to federal tax rules, many of which reshape how Americans file their income-tax returns. While most provisions take effect in 2026 and beyond, a few changes—and opportunities—apply for 2025 as well.
