Blog: Preventing Preschool Suspension

Holistic assessment can help prevent preschool suspensions and expulsions.

Dr. Dolores Stegelin, ICS Policy Research Fellow and Professor Emerita at Clemson University, published a blog post on how holistic assessment can be used as a tool to prevent preschool suspensions and expulsions. Holistic assessment gathers information from a variety of sources about a child, to help educators make informed decisions about the child's unique abilities, challenges, and needs.

Read the full blog post here.

"Preschoolers are suspended or expelled at a higher rate than students in elementary through high school ages. To make matters worse, children of color, particularly Black boys, are suspended and expelled at disproportionately high rates due to implicit biases of staff and overly strained preschool systems...

Children communicate the best way they know how. Determining the message the child is trying to send, and then teaching a replacement behavior, is key… Preschool suspension and expulsion should be a last option and only when behaviors are truly dangerous for the child or their peers."

Upcoming & Recording Available

Webinar recordings are now available on the ECDHS website.

ICS is partnering with ZERO TO THREE, American Academy of Pediatrics, and other leading early childhood organizations on the development of the Early Childhood Development Health Systems (ECDHS) Evidence to Impact Center.

Upcoming ECDHS Webinar: Partnering With Existing Early Childhood Developmental Screening Initiatives (July 11 at 4:00 pm EDT)

This webinar will focus on how to partner with early childhood developmental screening initiatives across community sectors.

This webinar is for early childhood health care providers, community-based organizations involved in early childhood developmental screening, public health workers, and early childhood system leaders. CEU credits will be available to those who attend the live webinar.

ECDHS Webinar Recording Available: Systems Change in Early Childhood Using the Water of Systems Change Framework

Systems change is about shifting the conditions that hold a problem in place: The Water of Systems Change framework provides an actionable model that early childhood system leaders can use to produce measurable, lasting impact.

In this webinar, presenters introduced The Water of Systems Change and how it can be applied to early childhood systems-building work. They walked through six interdependent conditions that vary from “explicit” to “implicit”.

ICS in Newsweek:

Innovation in the Workplace

Bryan Boroughs shares in Newsweek how making space for play and failure can help inspire innovation in the workplace.

ICS's Bryan Ford Boroughs was featured in Newsweek for his expertise on intentional innovation! Learn more about his advice on "making space for play and failure." See an excerpt below, and read the full article here.

"Innovation and creativity are entirely about a willingness to try out ideas without knowing that they will work. That's also a description of play and a description of failure. My advice is to make space for play (Google's 20% time is a great example of this) and make it safe to fail. Wayne Gretzky fell down in practice a lot more than other players; it's why he was the best on the ice."

ICS Spotlighted at Sorenson Impact Summit

Bryan Boroughs, Mary C. Garvey, and Jamie Moon at the Sorenson Impact Summit.

Earlier this month, ICS CEO Jamie Moon, Chief Equity Officer Mary C. Garvey, and Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel Bryan Boroughs attended the Sorenson Impact Summit 2024 in Park City, Utah. An invite-only gathering curated by the Sorenson Impact Institute at the University of Utah, this year’s theme was Elevating Impact for a Regenerative Future.

During a session on lessons learned during the first decade of impact investing, Bryan was called on by panelists to present on the Hello Family model. His brief overview of impact was met with applause. First year results for Hello Family Spartanburg show 58 avoided instances of abuse and neglect – 58 families who get to stay together in a healthy and safe environment. ICS is excited about the life-changing impact of this work!

National Black Child Development Institute

Deborah DePaoli, Dr. Crystal Campbell, and Dr. Devonya Govan-Hunt.

In celebration of National Black Child Development Week (NBCDW), ICS partnered with the National Black Child Development Institute (NBCDI), First Steps, state leaders and family advocates from across South Carolina and North Carolina on June 12 to kickoff NBCDI-Carolinas at Brookland Baptist Church in Columbia. The group gathered to create a vision of impact for Black and brown children in the Carolinas centered around NBCDI’s eight essential outcomes for Black child development.

Representing ICS were Palmetto Engagement & Policy Director Deborah DePaoli, Chief Equity Officer Mary C. Garvey, Chief Operating Officer Bryan Boroughs and ICS Board Member and Executive Director of Dorchester County First Steps Dr. Crystal Campbell. ICS is grateful for Dr. Devonya Govan-Hunt’s tireless leadership as she worked closely with Deborah and our team over the past few months. We look forward to further engaging in an NBCDI Action Group that joins the Carolinas in improving outcomes for Black and brown children and their families.

ICS Supports Family Learning Partnership

in Florida

Manya and Tyson with Lisa Blair, President and CEO of the Family Learning Partnership and Executive Director of Reach Out and Read Florida, and Evelio Torres, President and CEO of Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe.

Tyson and Manya have fun at a baseball game with our Family Learning Partnership partners!

Pediatric well-child visits are vital for the health of children and families. Family Learning Partnership, in collaboration with Institute for Child Success, is committed to supporting positive relationships between parents and medical providers. To better understand how to foster such relationships, our team recently conducted focus groups with diverse families in Jacksonville and Miami-Dade. We listened to parents share their experiences with clinicians: what works well, what challenges they faces, and how healthcare visits could be improved. Armed with valuable feedback from families, and with research and evaluation support from Institute for Child Success, Family Learning Partnership will apply these learnings as they expand the Reach Out and Read clinic network across Florida and equip medical providers with strategies to build trusting relationships and create a positive well-child visit experience tailored to families’ needs.

Learn more about the work Dr. Manya Bell and Dr. Tyson Barker are doing to support organizations in the areas of Measurement & Evaluation here.
