Meeting the Right People

By Jon Marshall, Owner of Suncoast NPI

One of the reasons we repeat the list of “why we do this” at the end of every Suncoast NPI meeting is because those reasons are honest. They describe what actually motivates professionals to show up every week and invest in this organization.

One of those reasons is simple and practical. We meet professionals we otherwise would not know.

Most of us did not join Suncoast NPI because we needed another meeting on our calendar. We joined because we wanted to grow our business. We wanted access to strong professionals who could refer us with confidence and who expected the same from us. Over time, something interesting happens. The longer you stay, the more you realize that the people in the room become one of the most valuable parts of your life.

You start by learning how someone serves their clients. Then you begin learning about their story, their values, and what motivates them to do the work they do. The conversations move beyond business. You discover what matters to people, what they care about, and the purpose that drives them each day. Those relationships change the experience of being part of this organization.

Of course, those relationships still help your business. When you truly know the professionals around you, referrals become easier to give. You understand who they serve. You recognize when an opportunity fits their work. You can introduce them to a potential client with confidence because you know how they operate and what kind of results they deliver.

I see this happen in our chapters all the time. Members who invest time in building relationships inside the chapter tend to give stronger referrals and receive stronger referrals in return. They have more one to ones. They ask better questions. They listen carefully to how others describe their ideal clients. Over time, those habits create a network of professionals who understand each other well enough to support real business growth.

But the impact goes beyond business results. When you spend time with people who take their work seriously and care about serving others well, it influences the way you approach your own purpose. You learn from each other. You challenge each other. You gain new perspective on what it means to build a business and a life that matters.

The purpose of Suncoast NPI grows through those relationships. Our organization exists to help professionals succeed through trust, service, and consistency. Every time you sit down with someone you have not gotten to know yet, you strengthen that purpose. You create another connection that can serve your clients, support your fellow members, and influence the way you show up in your work and in your life.

So here is a simple challenge for this month. Choose two members you do not know well and schedule time to meet with them. Learn how they serve their clients. Ask what kind of referrals help them most. Listen carefully to the way they describe their work and what motivates them to do it.

You might discover a new referral opportunity. You might learn something that improves your own business. You might even gain a relationship that shapes your life in ways you did not expect.

The more professionals you get to know in this organization, the easier it becomes to pass quality referrals and grow your business with confidence. And along the way, you build relationships that make the journey far more meaningful.

In abundance, Jon

Power of Purpose – Meeting the Right People

As the owner of The Ludwick Agency,, a private investigative and security consulting firm, I’m unique among Suncoast NPI. As of this writing, there are no other private investigators

in any of the various chapters around the area.

Many private investigators I talk with suggest that belonging to a networking alliance is a “waste of time” or “doesn’t work,” but they are flat-out wrong; they truly don’t understand the “Power of Purpose.” Fortunately, I do, and it has helped me and my business more than they will ever know.

My 23 years in the FBI taught me a lot about networking, working with people, and understanding teamwork and collaboration. But what all those years in the FBI did not teach me was how to run a business. For me, that is exactly what Suncoast NPI has done through our theme for this month: To Meet Professionals You Otherwise Would Not Know.

Yes, Suncoast NPI has brought me referrals, but the true value I’ve seen has been building a network of people I would never have met or been exposed to. I’ve leaned on my Suncoast NPI network for advice on marketing, advertising, billing, management, administration, and even state bureaucracy. These talented and experienced people in Suncoast NPI have willingly offered support and guidance to help me and my business grow, and all from people I would otherwise not have known. Critically, this advice and guidance often come from people who own businesses that don’t necessarily seem like good referral partners for a private investigator, but through the power of many 1:1s, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected. The professionals within Suncoast NPI, no matter what they do, always seem to have something to offer. These intangibles are priceless.

I’ve been doing investigations in some form or another for close to 30 years. I’ve run the gamut of espionage investigations, cyber, criminal, counterterrorism, technical operations, management, leadership, and so much more as a Special Agent in the FBI.

As a private investigator, I’ve found missing people, advised on security strategies, provided court narratives on electronic surveillance, interviewed accident witnesses, and worked on infidelity cases. Not to brag, but I am good at what I do. However, I am still new to running a business, and through our Power of Purpose, specifically by Meeting Professionals I Otherwise Would Not Know, I can couple my investigative expertise with a network of people who can help me with the things I am not an expert on, like building and growing a business. Over the past few years, the networks I’ve built and continue to develop have been instrumental to my success. Thanks to all of you, and here’s to those business owners I have yet to meet. Let’s schedule a 1:1 to learn how to help each other!
