Many of you know I teach two classes of DE American Government alongside Ms. Desmond. Through the generosity of Chris Anthony’s Youth Project Initiative, last week we had the rare privilege to speak for one hour via Zoom to a member of the U.S. Supreme Court – Justice Neil Gorsuch.
Given this is Election Week, many of you may have voter, or even American citizen, fatigue. I want to encourage you by sharing a few excerpts from my students who expressed these words of gratitude (along with lessons learned) to Justice Gorsuch. Regardless of your political beliefs or how you wish justices would interpret the U.S. Constitution (loose or strict, originalist or living), I think we can all agree that we are blessed to be Americans.
- I liked your advice about the one thing you will never regret – kindness.
- Our conversation affirmed that I want to pursue an impactful career after college.
- I was pleased to find out that the rest of the court can debate the cases you hear, but can still be friends outside the courtroom.
- I particularly found it interesting when you talked about how if you do your job right, you should not be remembered in history books or remembered at all.
- I think you are a very kind soul and value the importance of learning from those who came before you.
- Your vast knowledge of the judicial system and overall kind personality has beckoned me to look more into American politics.
- I learned that the Justices have to really put away their own personal opinions to interpret the Constitution.
- I appreciated how you discussed not wanting to be put in political party boxes. That motivated me to see others for their values rather than the box they check on their ballot.
- I liked that you said your most important case of all time is the case you’re working on at any given time.
- It was very inspiring to see that whatever you want to be in life you can be if you truly work hard, give it your all, and are passionate about it.
- You are one of the most inspiring people I have encountered. I know you gained nothing in speaking to us, so it is incredibly noble how you chose to speak and educate us out of the good of your heart. I find that many people in a place of high power, often times lose their sense of nobility and humanity. Not you. You care when you don't have to.
- Thank you so much for being honest with me that sometimes your job, when you have to be impartial, your convictions may differ from your Constitutional interpretation and you have to make peace with yourself.
- Your interest in me and all of my classmates filled me with so much confidence. Your character has inspired me to strive for greatness in everything I do.
- Your kind words about staying humble and consistent no matter what path you take in life, has inspired me to step out of my comfort zone.
- I am truly grateful for you, and it is an honor to be a part of the country you work so hard to serve.
May God continue to bless America, especially through our Saints!
