Every Child Matters - 4 Seasons of Reconciliation a Wonderful Opportunity!
We are working in partnership with Reconciliation Education, the First Nations University of Canada, the Orange Shirt Society, the Moose Hide Campaign, and our Outdoor Learning Partners to offer this new and unique Indigenous Learning opportunity.
The Every Child Matters - 4 Seasons of Reconciliation learning initiative seeks to better acknowledge that Indigenous Knowledge and Perspectives are foundational to outdoor learning, and that non-Indigenous educators need to undertake further steps towards Truth and Reconciliation in order to engage appropriately and authentically and build respectful and reciprocal relationships. It also acknowledges that a key step non-Indigenous educators can take in engaging with Indigenous learning is by going outside and learning from the land.

Join us from February 15 – June 15, 2023.
Registration is just $100 ($20/month for 5 months) and includes:
  • 10 Reconciliation Education Learning Modules (~1 Hour of Learning / Month)
  • A Certificate of Completion issued by the First Nations University of Canada
  • 5 opportunities to gather virtually with Indigenous Leaders, Elders and Educators
  • $25 towards excellent Indigenous Learning Resources
  • Access to a Learning Community from across Turtle Island (North America)
This learning opportunity is open to EVERYONE. While content is mostly in the context of Canada, this learning is relevant across Turtle Island (North America).
A Wise Way to Support the Camp - Monthly Giving
If you’re like most Canadians, you may make that mad dash in December trying to figure out which charities you will support and how much you will give before the year end charitable tax receipt deadline. Then comes that larger than life credit card bill in January!

Instead of putting off donating to the end of the year when budgeting is more like juggling (can I pay my VISA with my Mastercard?), it may be time to consider monthly giving. This is a scheduled donation given usually monthly and once you are signed up all you must do is wait for the tax receipt for the full amount that comes in time for tax season the following year!
You'll love monthly giving!
  • it is easier on your budget, and you avoid that scramble in December to get donations in before the 31st!
  • it is easy to track either through your credit card statement or CanadaHelps.
  • it is easy to sign up – open a free CanadaHelps account, search for Camp Kawartha, set the amount of your monthly donation and set up the automatic payment process OR you can contact us to set up an automatic system with our Bookkeeper, Karen!
  • and monthly giving allows you make a bigger impact – instead of spreading your donations in small amounts over several charities, choosing the Camp and donating monthly means we receive a larger amount that makes a difference.
$10.00 per month over 12 months equals $120.00 for the Camp and a $120.00 tax receipt for you! $10 a month equals one lunch out per month (possibly only a portion of a lunch 😊); $25 equals one dinner out…you get the picture!

You can donate the amount you can manage each month -- $10, $25, $100 – whatever works.

If you want to sign up, please contact our Bookkeeper, Karen – karen@campkawartha.ca – or visit CanadaHelps.ca and set up your account. Easy peasy!
COEO Hosts Their Conference at Camp Kawartha
More than 100 outdoor educators from across the province visited our main site at Camp Kawartha for an educational retreat called Make Peace with Winter from January 20th to January 22nd

Offered by the Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario (COEO), this organization is dedicated to promoting safe and high quality-outdoor education experiences for people of all ages and, acts as a professional body for outdoor educators in the province of Ontario.
Presenters covered many topics helping teachers, students and outdoor educators develop skills to enjoy winter. Indigenous presenters shared their teachings, helping everyone explore how best to approach and respect indigenous perspectives, practices, and relationships. Camp Kawartha staff offered up many workshops on our Pathway to Stewardship and Kinship Program, animal tracking, Adventures in Understanding and others.

We thank the COEO organizers for all their hard work in pulling this together! They were all great to work with and we appreciate the time and effort that went into such a successful event.
If you have a conference on the horizon and are considering venue options, think of Camp Kawartha! We can help you make your conference an unforgettable experience.

NATURE NOTES
Nature Showcase - The Flicker
Look at the size of that beak! Wow! This is a bird with a sharp, pointy bill!

The Common Flicker, or Northern Flicker, is member of the Woodpecker family, so it makes sense that their bill is so large.
These birds, as their name suggests, are common throughout North America and we saw one trying to get at one of our feeders the other day.

They are a ground-feeder, mostly taking grubs and ants, but will also take insects from fallen trees and logs and in mid-air! When insects are not available, such as now, they will eat fruits, seeds, and berries and that explains why ours was trying to get at the sunflower seeds in our feeder.

Their markings make them quite distinctive, and it is the black and white stripping on the top of the wings, the black spots on their chest and belly, plus patch of red on the back of the head that make them easy to identify. The beak helps too!

And they are big! Their wingspan is usually around 50cms (20”) and their bodies up to 35cms (14”). They like to live in forests and nest in tree cavities. Six to eight eggs are incubated by the mother and father for about 12 days and the chicks will fledge around 4 weeks.

They are still common but surveys have demonstrated that their numbers have been declining since the 1960s. Habitat loss is the biggest culprit.
