VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Volunteer of the Year announced at the 2024 Community Partner & Volunteer Celebration

Disney Elementary volunteer "Grandpa" Hank Molinengo was named 2023-2024 Volunteer of the Year.

Molinengo retired as a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps in 2008, going on to become the Senior Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs at the George Washington University Law School. After retiring from his distinguished career, he was determined to pay it forward.

"Based on time working with young Navy lawyers and then working with law students, I learned one important lesson: there is no substitute for a quality elementary school education," said Molinengo. "When we moved here in 2020, I was determined to become a volunteer a school could count on. This work is how I can contribute to my community. I see what a tough job elementary school educators and staff have. Receipt of this award tells me that I am on the right track in my efforts to support Disney Elementary, and I look forward to continuing to volunteer there in any capacity."

At Disney Elementary, Molinengo serves students and staff in a variety of ways. He volunteers in the library, works school events and even wipes down tables. In addition to his work, he serves as an SPS Ambassador.

"Throughout my career at SPS, I've seen the impact volunteers and community partners have on our students, staff and the district as a whole," said Judy Brunner, Vice President of the Board of Education. "We truly could not do the work we do without the work of our volunteers and partners, and we value their time, talent and partnership to serve students and SPS staff."
