Library Upgrades And A Call For Volunteers
|
It's also a busy time of year for the library's staff and volunteers,
with an increase in activity and circulation.
By Dinah Wolff, President
Yarmouth Port is finally greening up, forecasting extra hours spent tending our yards and gardens. It's also a busy time of year for the library's staff and volunteers, with an increase in activity and circulation.
Those returning after a winter away will notice a uniform look to the entire front of the building's interior, as new carpeting was installed in the circulation area and both wings, as well as in the work room; eliminating the patchwork of successive partial carpeting projects makes our space look bigger and more attractive. This undertaking was funded by the Building and Grounds Reserve for Deferred Maintenance.
Patrons with an eye for detail may note that our flag was upgraded in the early Spring. Marieluise Hutchinson gave us a larger and more appropriate-sized flag, dedicating the gift to Sally White in honor of her longtime association with and support of the Library.
Our Annual Book & Plant Sale, coming up this year on Saturday, July 8, provides a number of volunteer opportunities for members of the Library community: sorting books, transferring boxes of sorted books to the sale tables, and staffing the cashiers' tables. (Unfortunately, too often this also includes making dump runs to dispose of unsaleable books that well-meaning donors deliver to the library without checking first for appearance and currency.)
As for the Plant Sale portion of this event, help is welcomed for sorting, tagging, and pricing of potted plants and garden accessories.
Anyone interested in joining this effort will find sign-up sheets at the Circulation Desk, or can speak with Sue Bonnell (books) or Sally Hockenbury (plants). Call the librarians for contact information.

It's a great time to come to the library.
By Lynn Lesperance, Co-Librarian
Summer is finally arriving. Our robins and snowbirds are returning. It's a great time to come to the library.
Our monthly programs will finish up in June. Lapsit Storytime's season finale will be June 10th and Music and Movement with Denya will end for the summer on June 30th. Both programs will return again in September. In the meantime, we invite you to stop in often and get books, movies, music, magazines and more to help you enjoy the up-coming summer in style and comfort.
On Wednesday, July 26th at 2 PM families will get a special treat. This year, Rainforest Reptile Shows will present "Reptiles Rock!" Come see, learn and touch some pretty amazing animals right here at YPL. You can get a sneak preview on their website: rainforestreptileshows.com. It's open to all ages and is free but this one is sure to be a sell-out, so please, call to reserve your space.
Sick of the beach? Tired of the heat? Can't stand the traffic? Want to spend some (relatively) quiet, quality time together as a family? Then, come on in and hang out with us. And - an additional bonus - Fridays during the summer are Drop-In Family Lego Days.
I look forward to seeing you!

Free Books, Browsing Copies and Recommended Books
|
In all the busy-ness, make sure to allow time for reading!
By Leslie Altman, Co-Librarian
As the poet said, "sumer is acumin' in." He was writing in the 13th century, so he can't be faulted for his spelling. But we all know what he meant: warmer temperatures, more visitors, and the beckoning beach. In all the busy-ness, make sure to allow time for reading! Check out the basket of free books in the Reading Room: these are books that have been withdrawn from our shelves to make room for newer items. Help yourself and then pass them on. Some are perfect for "beach reading."
Browsing Copies for YPL Patrons: As you may know, we sometimes buy two copies of books or DVDs that have many holds on them in CLAMS. As of May, if we buy two copies of an item, we can catalog one of them as a "browsing copy." Browsing copies will circulate only to our patrons. You will see them on the shelves in the "new materials" area. They will be marked with a purple label on the spine of the book, so that we can distinguish them from the copies that circulate to all CLAMS libraries-just another way we strive to get the books you want into your hands as quickly as possible. A list of upcoming titles can be found on the YPL website.
Recommended Books: We are delighted when our patrons recommend books they have enjoyed. Now we have a process for you to recommend a book to others as well. Just inside the front door you will find a display of books recommended by your friends and neighbors. We will also display books recommended by volunteers and staff. Make sure to take a look. And please add to the list with your own favorites. This summer keep an eye out for new books by some favorite authors: Elizabeth Strout, John Grisham, Nancy Thayer, Julia Glass, and-after a long silence-Arundhati Roy, who won the Booker Prize for The God of Small Things in 1997.
Book Groups & Upcoming Selections: We continue to strive to provide the best possible service to you. Let us know your wishes. I'm still looking for a fe
w hardy men to begin a men's book group. Let me know if you are interested. Our regular
bo
ok group (men are allowed) is thriving, and guests are always welcome. We take July and August off, but will be back on the third Thursday of every month beginning in
September. The book selection for June is Inheriting Edith by Zoe Fishman and the book for September is The Woman Next Door by Yewande Omotoso (South Africa is the setting).

The Yarmouth Port Library Book Club
The Book Club meets the third Thursday of each month at 3 PM in the Library Reading Room. The next meeting is June 15th. Please join us for lively and interesting discussion. Newcomers (and men!) are always welcome! And refreshments are served. The Club takes July and August off but after the June meeting will resume in September.
June:
A poignant breakout novel, for fans of J. Courtney Sullivan and Elin Hilderbrand, about a single mother who inherits a beautiful beach house with a caveat-she must take care of the ornery elderly woman who lives in it.

September:
|
October:
by Amor Towles
The book opens a few years after the Russian Revolution in a period of violent upheaval. A handsome count named Alexander Rostov has been ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a servant's bedroom in a luxury hotel.

2017 Membership Campaign Close to Goal
|
Our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed, at whatever level.
Your gifts are truly appreciated!
By Les Peat, Treasurer
As the 2017 Membership Campaign draws to a close on June 30th, it would appear that we will come close to achieving our announced goal of $40,000, largely thanks to 60 new members and to the generosity of those renewing members who made additional gifts or stepped up to a higher level of membership.
In fact, every membership category is important to our success. While the top three categories, representing only about 10% of donors, contributed nearly half the total dollars, without the solid support of our $30, $50, and $100 contributors, we would not have come close to achieving our goal.
Our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed, at whatever level. Without the 25% of our operating income that comes from the Membership Campaign, we would never be able to provide the level of library services that the Yarmouth Port community deserves.
For a list of contributers as of April 30, 2017 click here.

New Memorial Funds Established
|
Supporting the purchase of children's and adult books
Eleanor V. Talbot Fund:
A new endowment fund to support the purchase of children's books has been established by the family and friends of Eleanor V. Talbot, who died a resident of Heatherwood on October 2, 2016, at the age of 104.
Mrs. Talbot and her late husband were originally from Ohio, but were part-time residents of Yarmouth Port from the 1960s through the 1980s. They then lived briefly in Osterville. After her husband's death in 1994, Mrs. Talbot returned to Yarmouth Port as a full-time resident at King's Way and later at Heatherwood.
An artist, a trained librarian and a voracious reader, Mrs. Talbot was an active Yarmouth Port Library user for the better part of half a century. Her obituary in the New York Times concluded with this request: "In celebration of her life, please give a child a book." The Eleanor V. Talbot Memorial Fund will not only memorialize her association with the library, but also honor that request in perpetuity, benefiting generations of children to come.
* * * * *
Jane Stratton Fund:
We are also pleased to announce the establishment of a fund in memory of Jane Stratton, who died on April 12th. Ms. Stratton had been a patron of the library since the 1950s. She became a full-time resident of Yarmouth Port in 1972. In recent years, she was an active member of the library's book group.
The fund, established by her long-time partner, Fred Brown, with additional gifts from family and friends, is to support the purchase of adult books for the collection. Ms. Stratton read avidly and widely on many topics and this will be reflected in the purchasing guidelines of the fund.
