Event Recap: Member Breakfast – BDC’s Economic Outlook 2025

On May 15, 2025, members gathered bright and early at the Ramada for a Chamber breakfast featuring Pierre Cléroux, Vice President, Research and Chief Economist at BDC. It was a great turnout with plenty of conversation, hot coffee, and connection.

Pierre shared BDC’s latest insights on Canada’s economy, followed by a thoughtful Q&A with our members. The room was engaged, with lots of note-taking and meaningful discussion throughout the morning.

After the presentation, guests had the chance to mingle and catch up before heading off to start their day. Big thanks to everyone who joined us—and to BDC for partnering on this event.

A Note from Neil

Hadih and hello.

Like many clichés, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” is true and it’s truest of all in politics.

As you may know, the next municipal election is Oct. 17, 2026, meaning the last budget the current mayor and council will approve will be next spring, with work starting this fall. That means now is the time for the local business community to raise its political advocacy efforts for meaningful change. Put bluntly, if those running for re-election want your support next fall, now is the time they’re most likely to listen to your concerns and take real action. By waiting until next year to speak up, we get into campaign promises and I don’t need to tell you what those are worth when the following election won’t be until 2030.

To best advocate on your behalf to mayor and council (and administration), I need to hear from you. Specifically, how big was your tax increase this year and how big has that increase been since 2023? How is that affecting you and your business? On the safety front, have things become worse, better or stayed the same since the fall of 2022, when the current council was elected? Lastly, what does council need to approve from a budgetary and/or policy standpoint over the next 12 months to show they hear your concerns?

As a Chamber member, you’re paying me to be that squeaky wheel on your behalf because you’re too busy running your business and you’re just one person. When I advocate on your behalf, the elected officials don’t see me, they see you and the 540 Chamber members I represent. To be fair to our mayor and council (and our regional, provincial, and federal politicians), they want to make the best decisions they can to help businesses be successful and the community prosper. That’s why they ran for office in the first place.

So now’s the time to be squeaky.

If you want to discuss in person, I’d be happy to meet you at your workplace.

I look forward to hearing from you and working on your behalf to support your business.

All my best,

Neil
